Grant Director – Thea Jones, tjones@bcps.org
Grant Facilitator – Kathleen Egan, kegan@bcps.org

Goal: Support the attainment of skills and knowledge in Algebra/Data Analysis through the use of e-Learning.

Objectives:

  1. Enhance the online resources for Algebra/Data Analysis in support of the Core Learning Goals and High School Assessment;
  2. Develop, pilot, and provide online professional development using a consistent protocol based upon the Maryland Teacher Professional Development Standards and focused on providing high quality professional development for teachers of Algebra/Data Analysis;
  3. Select and use a learning object repository in order to make the digital content from the online student course and professional development course accessible to Algebra/Data Analysis teachers;
  4. Develop, pilot, and provide a process for online course design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

FOR STUDENTS: ONLINE STUDENT ALGEBRA/DATA ANALYSIS COURSE
The online Algebra/Data Analysis course is designed to provide greater access for Maryland public school students to the Algebra/DA Core Learning Goals. It focuses on skills and concepts needed for success on the Algebra/DA high School Assessment.

The student lessons in this course provide:

  • Explicit content that will increase achievement
  • Engaging activities with contextual settings
  • Conceptual development of content
  • Support for low literacy learners
  • Key questions and opening activities to “hook” the students
  • Formative and summative assessments incorporating item types found on the Algebra/DA High School Assessment.

The online courses can:

  • Be incorporated into regular instruction.
  • Supplement your intervention and remediation efforts.
  • Extend regular instruction for students who are absent, need extra practice, or need extended learning time.
  • Help involve parents and other educators in the learning process.
There are two ways for teachers to use online HSA courses . . .
Option 1: General access to all interactive content without the need for registration or training.
Option 2: Full access with assessment options, student progress tracking, and customizable features. Training is available and required for this level of access.
Steps to accessing the online courses for teachers
Option 1: General Access
  1. Sign in using the following Username/Password.
    Username: algebra
    Password: student
  2. Read the directions in the News section.
Option 2: Full Access
Once you have completed the required professional development, Using the Online Algebra/Data Analysis Course, you need to register for the online HSA course.
FOR TEACHERS: USING THE ONLINE STUDENT ALGEBRA/DATA ANALYSIS COURSE
This professional development opportunity is for teachers of Algebra/Data Analysis who want to learn how to use the online student course content to support success on the Algebra/Data Analysis High School Assessment. Participants who successfully complete the course will be eligible for three MSDE credits.

Goals and Objectives – Teachers will be able to effectively use the online Algebra/DA course to differentiate instruction for students based on data-driven decisions.

  • Teachers will apply their understanding of the tools to personalize a copy of the Algebra/DA course.
  • Teachers will apply their understanding of the tools to personalize a copy of the Algebra/DA course.
  • Teachers will demonstrate knowledge of the structure and content of the Algebra/DA course.
  • Teachers will analyze data from local and state sources and Desire2Learn to inform instruction for students.
  • Teachers will develop a plan for using the online Algebra/DA course with students.
    will develop a plan for using the online Algebra/DA course with students.
    Summer 2008 Application.
FOR TEACHERS: ONLINE GOVERNOR’S ACADEMY
The Online Governor’s Academy is designed so teacher-participants will connect theory to best practices through study, application, and reflection on educational research, problem solving, differentiated instruction, and instructional strategies including literacy strategies in order to enrich and improve algebra education and the performance of their students. Participants who successfully complete the academy will be eligible for six MSDE credits.

The academy is divided into six units. Units 1 through 3 make up Course 1 and Units 4 through 6 make up Course 2. Each unit includes several lessons each designed to deepen teachers’ knowledge about research-based pedagogy and mathematical content of the Algebra/Data Analysis High School Assessment. Throughout this course teacher-participants will promote positive learning experiences for their students as they collaborate with other teachers and reflect on their experiences in order to improve their understanding of:

  • What they teach - Content
  • Who they teach – Knowing the learner
  • How they teach – Pedagogy
Teacher-participants will receive electronic copies of many engaging student activities to use in their Algebra/DA classrooms.
Fall 2008 – Spring 2009 Application.
