Elementary Education
Kindergarten
In kindergarten, children will recognize feelings and how they affect
the way a person behaves; acknowledge that people are different with
different backgrounds, likes, and abilities; listen to and follow directions;
understand and practice basic safety rules in school and traveling to,
from, and on the bus; recognize and understand not to touch poisons
and other unsafe substances; learn what the doctor, dentist, nurse,
police officer and other professionals do to keep a person safe and
healthy; learn about foods from the farm and in the supermarket; make
healthy snacks; and identify how exercise helps the body.
Grade One
In grade one, children will practice working together and following
rules; learn about preventing and treating illness; identify their senses;
understand the need for dental hygiene, healthy food choices, skin care,
and good posture; determine ways to get the rest and exercise they need;
identify family roles and responsibilities in supporting health and
safety; identify how people change as they grow; determine healthy ways
to communicate needs, wants, emotions and opinions; recognize the different
ways people communicate; identify health issues faced by characters
in stories and determine healthy ways for the characters to address
those issues.
Grade Two
In grade two, children will continue to explore the need for exercise,
sleep, proper nutrition, care of the skin and senses, and disease prevention;
practice healthy ways to express themselves; determine how people are
alike and different; identify ways to build self concept in themselves
and others; identify how to manage stress and learn from mistakes; develop
an awareness of how family, friends, and peers influence decision making;
use a decision making model to practice solving problems; identify rules
for medicine safety; review safety in the home and community, which
includes bike and bus safety; determine ways to stay safe from adults,
other children, and situations that may be dangerous; and identify steps
to take in emergency situations.
Grade Three
In grade three, students will: continue to explore how self concept
influences decisions and behaviors; distinguish between healthy and
unhealthy choices when making a decision; use role play to practice
response skills; determine healthy ways to resolve conflicts; increase
their knowledge of healthy habits and disease prevention; determine
how the information provided on labels and in advertisements can influence
product selection and use; explore the effects of medicines, caffeine,
tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs on the body; and identify the factors
that influence people to use harmful substances and ways to address
these factors.
Grade Four
In grade four, students will identify skills and strategies for
health promotion and apply them to a personal health plan These include
applying knowledge of the benefits of proper nutrition, hygiene, rest,
and exercise, as well as substance abuse and disease prevention. In
addition, students will examine how family, culture, product information,
and the media influence health decisions and behaviors; identify problems
fourth graders might face and apply a decision making model; distinguish
between safe and unsafe situations in their environment and determine
ways they and others can address them; review and expand on information
relating to safety and injury prevention; and explore the various career
opportunities in the health field.
Grade Five
In grade five, students will continue to develop and refine coping,
decision making, and interpersonal skills and relate these to adolescent
growth and development. They will receive information on the physical
and emotional changes that have been and will continue to take place
as their bodies mature; define stress, understand it is a necessary
part of living, and identify healthy ways to manage it; increase their
knowledge of disease transmission, including elementary concepts of
HIV/AIDS infection, and how to prevent the spread of infections; identify
and address the individual and family impact of tobacco, alcohol, and
other drug use/abuse, the peer and media influences to use, and the
laws and policies addressing these issues; and practice conflict resolution
and resistance skills in scenarios depicting age-appropriate health
concerns.
