Rubrics and Scoring Tools

When should a teacher use a rubric? When should a teacher use a checklist?

A rubric is a type of scoring tool that uses a set of standards and expectations to evaluate a student's work. If the rubric is developed and reviewed with the student prior to the start of the assessment, then the rubric helps bring clarity to the assignment. Rubrics assign point values to certain standards of writing. The SAT essay rubric is a familiar format that scores writing on a 6 point scale, with six being the highest score.

Rubrics use descriptors to indicate the specifics of quality writing for each numeric score. A six on an SAT rubric would indicate that the writer is insightful, uses sophisticated language, maintains a voice and utilizes an organized essay format beginning with a clear stance and transitions to connect the supports.

A checklist is a simple tool used to help students identify that specific elements are included in an assignment. A checklist is used by the student and it is rarely used by a teacher to score or evaluate an assignment. A checklist provides a student with an opportunity to self-evaluate basic elements.

 

Writing Prompts

Prompts are detailed sheets that can assign point values to specific information that should be included in an essay/narrative. All writing assignments should begin with a prompt, an 'entrance' method for defining the assignment. Likewise, a scoring rubric can be used at the end of the assignment to score the entire piece, looking for the 6 + 1 Traits. For instance a prompt may include the following with each area being worth ten points.

My narrative will include:

-a story beginning that includes action, description, and/or dialogue.

-an extended metaphor that contributes to characterization.

-three sentences that begin with each type of verbal: infinitive, gerund, participal.

It may be that a teacher will want to add a point value to the above specifications for the prompt. In that case, the prompt would look like:

My narrative will include:

-a story beginning that includes action, description, and/or dialogue. 10

-an extended metaphor that contributes to characterization. 10

-three sentences that begin with each type of verbal: infinitive, gerund, participal. 10

Because we know that revision is key for students becoming effective writers, the prompt can become the basis for a revision sheet. Interactive revision sheets force students to locate and respond to the specifics that are required in a prompt. Look at the some elements in the above prompt---reorganized to include points but also questions to show that the student or a peer evaluator can identify the elements within the draft.

Using prompts that clearly specifiy the content of the writing assignment helps students develop the structure of the story or essay. When the essay/story is completed, students can then use a rubric to score the effectiveness of the essay. Refer to the 6 + 1 Writing Traits rubrics.
