Description/Overview

Integrated with the Treasure in the Attic: Pre-Civil War Immigration Research Model.

Students will create a video diary as if they were an immigrant to the US in the mid 1800's.

Approximate Time Needed 335 minutes (180 research/write, 45 film, 90 edit)

Students will use historical thinking skills to understand how individuals and events have changed society over time.

1. Identify the push and pull factors responsible for immigration to the United States, such as the forced migration of Africans, Western European immigration
2. Analyze the causes and describe the characteristics of rapid settlement of California and Oregon in the late 1840s and 1850s

  1. View sample of a video diary

  4. Gather B-roll and stills
    • Stills of people and artifacts from the time period
    • Video of locations in which immigrants from the time period lived in the US.
  5. Storyboard
  6. Write script
    • Students use information found in their research to write their script
  7. Plan production
    • Think about where and when to film
    • Who is performing? Who is running the equipment? WHO'S IN CHARGE?
  8. Rehearse
  9. Shoot and compile
  10. Edit final product
    • Use MovieMaker (or other software)
    • Import the video from camera and/ or other sources
    • Arrange video / pictures
    • Add transitions and titles
    • Edit audio
    • Finalize and save
