Video Production Title News Story
Video Type A two minute weather forecast.
Description/Overview Students will create a weather forecast video for the Baltimore area, that also shows how the weather system progressed across the US.
Approximate Time Needed Prior to this lesson, students will have studied weather patterns and interactions as part of their 8th grade science class. 90 minutes to construct PowerPoint maps for background, and practice. Two minutes per student to perform final (may need 1-2 class periods for performances).

Production Environment Field Production or Studio (If a studio with chroma key (green screen) is available, that is the preferred setup. In the field you can use a projector to display the PowerPoint behind the forecaster)
Activities
  1. View a sample student weather forecast (this excellent, detailed weather report is part of an entire broadcast- it begins about 1/3 of the way into the video)
  2. Research topic
  3. Organize research
  4. Storyboard
  5. Create PowerPoint weather maps
    • There should be a slide for each map
  6. Write script
  7. Plan production
    • Think about where and when to film
    • If using chroma key, consider clothing colors. For example, don't wear green shirts using a green screen.
    • Who is performing? Who is running the equipment? WHO'S IN CHARGE?
  8. Rehearse
  9. Shoot and record
    • Only one camera angle should be used, and make sure that the framing is set to allow the forecaster to move around without needing to zoom or pan during the shot.
  10. Edit final product
    • Editing may not be necessary for this project.
    • Use MovieMaker (or other software)
    • Import the video from camera and/ or other sources
    • Arrange video / pictures
    • Add transitions and titles
    • Edit audio
    • Finalize and save
  11. Present/ share
    • Presentation may be simultaneous with recording.
