The task of the committee is to examine the current selection policy and related policies and rules (1976, 1987 revised) in order to ensure that staff and students have access to quality instructional materials that support the school systme's performance standards, the Voluntary State Curriculum, and the BCPS Essential Curriculum. The target date for completion of this revision is May 2009.
Since the last revision in 1987, much has changed in the educational materials industry - digital format, 24/7 web-based distribution systems accessible from every teacher's desktop, legal accessibility requirements for children with special needs, and the mere scope of educational materials. Along with the changes in the educational materials industry, significant technological changes continue to occur in the schoolhouse, e.g., before 1987 there were no computers in our schools. Our challenge is to recommend a policy and process to ensure instructional materials meet the evaluation criteria as well as make information and instructional resources accessible to staff.
