Center for Coastal & Watershed Studies > Data Sets
The Center investigates scientific processes related to societal problems arising in coastal and marine environments, including natural hazards, resources, and environmental change. Increased understanding of these topics will provide the basis for:

* predicting future coastal erosion,
* the fate of wetlands and coral reefs,
* accumulation of sediments,
* sediment transport and stability,
* circulation,
* movement of pollution through aqueous environments,
* and the locations of economically valuable minerals.

Science Education Materials

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (F.R.E.E. )
More than 30 Federal agencies formed a working group in 1997 to make hundreds of Federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. The result of that work is the FREE web site. Each month we add new teaching and learning resources.

Gateway to Educational Materials (G.E.M.)
"
The Gateway to Educational Materials is a Consortium effort to provide educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites. GEM is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and is a special project of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology. Teachers, parents, administrators can search or browse The Gateway and find thousands of high quality educational resources. Search for resources by grade level, subject, keyword, title, and those that are "free."

The Digital Library for Earth System Education ( DLESE) is a grassroots community effort involving educators, students, and scientists working together to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth system at all levels. DLESE supports Earth system science education by providing: Access to high-quality collections of educational resources; Access to Earth data sets and imagery, including the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use in educational settings; Support services to help educators and learners effectively create, use, and share educational resources; Communication networks to facilitate interactions and collaborations across all dimensions of Earth system education.

MarcoPolo Teacher Resources
MarcoPolo provides the highest quality educational resources to teachers and students. Developed by world-renowned organizations who are experts in their fields, these standards-based resources include lessons plans, student materials, reviewed Web resources and interactives.

This guide provides links to web pages, papers, data sources and examples illustrating use of data in the classroom as well as how to integrate global data sets into teaching and learning.

Envirothon

Objectives of the Maryland Envirothon are twofoldto test students' environmental knowledge and understanding of state resource issues and to instill a desire to learn more about the natural world. Working in teams of five (with one to two alternates), students are trained and tested in four natural resources areas including soil, aquatics, forestry, and wildlife, plus an environmental issue that changes from year to year
