The Library of Congress: "A Resource for a Lifetime"

The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts. The Library's mission is to make its resources available and useful to the Congress and American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations.

We often ask our students to retell the moral of a story or summarize the text. Here is an easy way to incorporate the grain of the story into a format that grabs our students. By using simple props, easy narration, and Reader's Theatre, we will act out a few folk tales and talk about how to incorporate this into your library framework.

This workshop will focus on a variety of online database services and Internet resources characteristic of today's information landscape. The workshop will focus on the design and structure of digital resources, advanced search techniques, and strategies for information retrieval. Participants will apply searching to understand information retrieval systems, including Internet search engines, and fee-based online resources.

Don't be a Numbutt, Surf your way to Internet Safety

Presenter: Stephanie Wiegert

23% of pre-school age & 32% of kindergarten children use the internet (National Center for Education Statistics). This means that any one of our students could become another statistic when internet crime is reported. Join me to learn about some "narly" resources that are out there to help you teach internet safety to elementary students. A web-based program has been created that takes our "surfers" from start to finish. Now all you have to do is catch the wave!

An Explosive Combination: Integrating Science, Technology & Research

Presenters: Nancy Reed, Kim Ports, Fran McDowell

A fifth grade teacher and two library/technology resource teachers will present a model for integrating research and technology into the science curriculum. Participants will discover ways to impact student achievement across the curriculum through implementation of the BCPS online research models. Presentations will include a demonstration of Microsoft Publisher as an assessment tool.

The Fence or the Ambulance: Are you Punishing or Preventing Plagiarism in your School?

Too much effort is expended in education trying to "catch" plagiarism in student work. Teachers and media specialists are using various web services and techniques using search engines to determine if or how much of student writing is lifted from online sources. While such tools are necessary and can be effective, educators should also be creating assignments , especially those that involve research, that minimize the likelihood of plagiarism in the first place. This workshop gives teachers the tools that help them design LPP (low probability of plagiarism) projects that require original, thoughtful research.

Will Your Destiny Include a Web-based Automation System?
Reaching New Levels of Service to the Students & Staff of Woodholme Elementary School

Attendees will be exposed to a new breed of library automation system that incorporates library circulation & catalog functions into one seamless web-based system. Destiny also offers textbook management functions and after hours catalog resource searching from a patron's home computer. A close look at Follett's Destiny System at Woodholme Elementary School will be presented during this session.

Sail Away! An Adventure for your Library

Every 4 years it happens!!! This is the year! The Volvo round the world race takes place, 8 boats will be sailing in Spain and 9 months later end up in Sweden. In the spring of 2006, they will race up the Chesapeake Bay and spend 3+weeks in the Baltimore area. Meeting the Instructional Challenges of the Millenials

This session will explore the unique issues and challenges of providing engaging instruction for the Millenials, or "digital natives". Discussions will focus on technology and cognitive processes, the role of "games" in acquiring content, and issues/changes that must be considered to successfully engage these unique learners.
