Subcommittee Reports

Parent Survey - Diane Mathieson, Chair

A copy of the proposed survey was presented. It consists of 16 questions, yes or no answers. All basic areas are covered. Ron Thomas, Office of Educational Accountability, was consulted during this process. The surveys will be distributed to a sampling of schools in each geographic area.

Sampling includes one high, 2 middle (not feeder), and 4 elementary. Schools selected are listed separately. Within the schools the surveys will be distributed to:

High - ninth grade

Middle - sixth grade

Elementary- second and fourth grades

All surveys will be mailed to the students' home. Students will return surveys to the school office or the library media specialist at their school.

Suggestions:

Surveys will be distributed March 2nd and returned by March 13th. LMS can bring the completed surveys to the March 18th meeting.

Diane's committee will tabulate the results and report the findings to the PIE committee and the Training Materials committee.

Training Materials - Ann O'Neill, Chair

They are working with Diane's group to organize the PIE Teams. Diane's group met with the PIE team at Franklin High. Several options were discussed.

Issues to cover:

Length of sessions: 2 hr recommended

Small seminars on different topics, schools could choose which seminars would meet their needs.

Should there be separate sessions for novice, experienced users?

A videotape is being planned; Parry Aftab is currently writing the script. Bob Harris will be working on this project also. It will cover the issues, kids, parents, beginning discussions. PIE teams could use this video with their communities.

Experience with adult education shows that parents want hands on experiences. This brings up the question of logistics - where and when are computer labs available. Kris was to contact Joe Rankin to get a list of computer labs in Balto. Co Public Schools with Internet Access. She was to investigate community businesses/colleges/universities that we could schedule (for free). Ann O'Neill committee will work with Kris to provide this information as part of the training packet. Woody Webster has been teaching senior citizens Internet use. We should tap into these senior citizens to become part of PIE teams or part of the teaching/trainers.

Committee members need to keep in mind the content, mission, skills, and message of PIE in all of the planning and training sessions.

Use a Web Page as a tutorial for PIE teams to use for training sessions.

PIE Local School Support Committee, Robin Washington, Chair

A draft letter to principals was distributed and reviewed by the Steering Committee. Della Curtis will prepare the final copy for distribution to principals.

Family Internet Expo Committee, Carrie Everhart, Chair

Towson University has signed on as a partner and will be providing the university facilities at no charge to Baltimore County Public Schools. The dates for the Expo are June 5-7. Della and Carrie will be meeting with Dr. Paul Jones and Drema Wertz to discuss specific needs for the Expo.

Carrie has prepared a list of 40+ vendors to invite to the Expo. Parry Aftab will be reviewing the list as she has already made contact with some of the vendors.

A committee of school administrators, parents, and teachers from Randallstown High School are assisting with the Expo.

Students in the Mass Communications Magnet at Randallstown are working on the video,m "Before, During, and After P.I.E.", a video chronicle of 3 families experience with learning about the Internet.

P.I.E. Video , Parry Aftab and Della Curtis

Parry is working on writing the script. She is to contact Bob Harris for specific requirements.

Marketing, Doris Glotzbach, Chair

Della will be working with Bob Harris the week of Feb. 23 to write and produce 4 or 5 public service announcements to be broadcast over the Education Channel.

Amy H., student member from Perry Hall Middle suggested that we involve the TAP committee of the Baltimore County Public Schools in our efforts.

Kay Jones will upload bulletin to librarians regarding the P.I.E. initiative; she will also be working on the P.I.E. webpage.
