Definition  A collection map is a graphical representation of the strengths and weaknesses of a library collection
  Technique used primarily in school libraries for evaluating the collection.
  Provides both a qualitative and quantiutative picture of the collection.
  Since the primary purpose of the school library is to support the school's curriculum, the categories of the collection map are based on the currricular needs of the school.

The collection map divides the existing collection into three main segments

  • Basic collection - support a wide variety of interests and needs
  • General emphasis - support whole courses of instructin, e.g., U.S. History
  • Specific emphasis - support units of instruction, e.g., Civil War
Questions
  • What is the size of the current collection? 
  • What is the quality of the current collection?
  • What is the condition of the collection?
  • How does the collection compare with national and state collection standards, other districts, other schools?
  • What funding trends have impacted collection development?
