PURPOSE OF REPORT: The Maryland State Department of Education conducts an annual survey of school library media programs in Maryland in order to assess compliance with MSDE Standards for School Library Media Programs. The data collection areas are STAFFING, COLLECTION, SERVICES, and INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM. The data collected will be published in a book, Facts About Maryland's School Library Media Programs. The information contained in this publication assists school districts with library media program development and support.

TITLEWISE ANALYSIS
SECTION I - GENERAL
  • Do not remove the label from the form.
  • Always place an answer in the space provided.
  • Count materials purchased with any source of funding, i.e., PTA, Title I, Chapter II, gift funds, fund raisers, etc. 
  • Make sure the sum total of answers to percentage sections is 100%.
  • Online data entry - Do not type commas, dashes, or percent signs - no punctuation
 
SECTION II - STAFFING
  • Count staff that are PAID personnel. Do not count volunteers.
  • The number should include all professional personnel WITH, WORKING TOWARD, or WITHOUT library media certification.

  Collection Holdings
To report holdings by FORMAT, e.g., books, videos/laser discs, computer software/CD-ROM, and other audiovisual material, use your TitleWise report. Use directions provided to you in your April 22, 2005 packet to determine the totals of the various formats needed for the report.
  Online Database Systems

The base number of centrally purchased licenses and MDK-12 Digital Library are shown below. Please use the numbers below and add any locally purchased subscriptions.

  • Elementary Schools - 14 subscriptions (BigChalk,Culture Grams, America the Beautiful, ProQuest, Brain-Pop, and MDK-12)
  • Middle Schools - 17subscriptions (eLibrary,Culture Grams, New Book of Popular Science, Literature Resource Center, Historical Newspapers ProQuest, DIALOG, Brain-Pop and MDK-12)
  • High Schools - 16 subscriptions (eLibrary, Culture Grams,Literature Resource Center, Historical Newspapers, ProQuest, DIALOG, and MDK-12)

SECTION IV - SERVICES Technology Services 

CIRCULATION SYSTEM and ELECTRONIC CATALOG (OPAC or PAC) - Answer YES if your school library is automated.

ACCESS FROM STUDENT'S HOMES' TO LMC - Answer NO

  Computer Lab

MANAGED BY THE LMC STAFF - Answer YES if you manage a computer lab within or outside the school library facility.

NETWORKED to LMC - Answer YES if any computer lab within the school, including the library computer lab or clusters of computers within the library, is networked to the LMC>

  Reference Resources

ONLINE - All schools should answer YES because of subscriptions to services such as BigChalk, LION, ProQuest, America the Beautiful, ABC-CLIO, and DIALOG.

INTERNET - Answer YES if you have network or dial-up access.

NUMBER OF INTERNET ACCESSIBLE COMPUTERS IN THE LMC - Schools with a computer lab adjacent to the LMC should count these computers.

CABLE - Answer YES if you have a Comcast Cable connection in your school.

OFF-AIR (Antenna Only) - Answer YES if your school is NOT connected to Comcast and you have TV reception via an antenna.

Section V - Instructional Scheduling  Schedule

FLEXIBLY SCHEDULED CLASSES - Answer YES if you do not have a year-long fixed schedule of classes.

SOME CLASSES REGULARLY SCHEDULED, OTHER CLASSES FLEXIBLY SCHEDULED - Some elementary schools have a combination where primary are fixed schedules and intermediate are flexible. Some middle schools have a fixed schedule where the librarian teaches "skill" classes or another course content. Answer YES if your schedule is described above.

ALL CLASSES REGULARLY SCHEDULED - Answer YES if you have a year-long fixed schedule of classes.

Roles Use your library schedule to determine these percentages. Enter percentages of time for each role and make sure the time percentage given totals 100%. See example below.

Elementary schools
Check box OVER 50% if either a fixed or partially fixed schedule.

Secondary schools

  • Get student enrollment figure.
  • Count number of classes per week.
  • Use 30 students as an average class size and multiply by total number of classes per week.
  • Count number of walk-in students during, and after school for a week.
  • Add class subtotal to walk-in subtotal.
  • Divide total by enrollment figure and convert to percent figure.
  • The total percentage sum is 100%.

TEACHERS
Count teacher visits before, during, and after school. Also, count teachers working with you and their classes in the LMC. Count teachers with whom you have collaborated to plan lessons.
