Science: Exploring Animals - Grade 2

 Focus:

All living things can be compared based on needs, similarities and differences.

Reading Strategies

Use pictures, graphs, charts and graphics to gain information and reorganize information into a different form to develop an interpretation of the text.

Demonstrate the ability to explain that all living things can be compared based on similarities and differences by identifying animal as vertebrate or invertebrate.

Demonstrate the ability to explain that all living things can be compared based on similarities and differences by classifying animal in the correct group.

Demonstrate the ability to explain that animals need air, water and food.

Demonstrate the ability to explain that habitats provide the basic needs for the organisms living in them by describing in words or pictures where the animal lives.

Demonstrate the ability to describe examples that show that living organisms have special parts that allow them to perform certain functions by drawing or writing about the special part and what it allows the animal to do.

BCPS Library Media Indicators:

Use research skills in order to evaluate, select, record, and reorganize information.

Use reference skills in order to locate information in a variety of sources.

 Extension Activities:

As a class, compose a letter to the Zoo Director persuading him to include the animal your class has chosen in the new Zoo. Attach the information card for your selection.

As a class, discuss why you needed to attach the information card about your animal.
