Sifting and Sorting Lesson Plan

Visit the Planets

Step Two

Investigation in the Research Process

Part 1: Gather, Read, Sift, and Sort

You will now begin your research to gather, read, sift, and sort information about the planets. Remember the categories in your database as you look for information.

Also keep your question in mind.

How do environments on different planets affect clothing, equipment, and other adaptations necessary for human survival?

Using Print Resources

Using keywords, search the Destiny automated catalog for nonfiction books in our library.

What is the keyword or subject that you are researching? _______________________

What is the name of the planet that you are researching?___________________________________

After you locate the books about the planets, gather, read, sift, and sort the information to answer the questions about the planets assigned to your group. Record the information in the appropriate category in your database.

As you gather information from print resources, you will need to cite the source of the information.

Using Nonprint Resources

You may use a variety of CD-ROM resources that will help you with your research. Use the same keywords to search for information. Spelling your keyword correctly is very important. If you do not spell your words correctly, you will not find your topic.

Once the program has started, look for direction words such as "search" or "find" with an empty rectangular box nearby. This is generally the place for you to type in your topic and/or keywords.

Scan the list of results and click on the ones that seem to match your research questions. Remember to gather, read, sift, and sort the information to answer the questions about the planets assigned to your group. Record the information in the appropriate category in your database.

Possible CD-ROM resources include:

  • Grolier's Encyclopedia
  • World Book Encyclopedia
  • A Field Trip to the Sky
  • The Magic Schoolbus Explores the Solar System

 Other possible nonprint resources include:

  • The Solar System (videotape)

As you gather information from CD-ROM resources, you will need to cite the source of the information.

Using Internet Resources

You will visit a variety of websites to gather information about the planets. Be sure to have your database available as you work.

The following websites may have information to help you answer your questions.

    Specific references:

Part 2: Synthesis and Evaluation

Now that you have gathered information, stop to evaluate your work. Look at your database with the information you found.

  • Have you found answers to all your questions?
  • Do you need to rearrange the information in different categories?
  • Do you need to develop new categories to cover your topic?

Work with your group to figure out what you have learned.

  • Have you found enough information about each category in your database?
  • Does the information help you to answer the questions on your K-W-L chart?

From the information you have gathered, can you make recommendations based on the answer to the question: How do environments on different planets affect clothing, equipment, and other adaptations necessary for human survival?

If you cannot answer this question, go back to the resources and keep researching!
