Teacher's Guide

The Snow Museum

 Scenario

What part of winter do you like the best? Is it the yummy hot chocolate you drink? Is it the warm, fuzzy sweater you wear? Or is it the snow?

Some people love the snow. They think it is pretty and fun. Other people don't like the snow. They think that it is too messy and cold.

How does the snow change your life during Winter?

Task and Product

Our class will create a Snow Museum to celebrate and share what we know and how we feel about snow. As we learn more about snow, we will make a snowflake self-portrait to go into our Hall of Snowflakes.  We will also make a winter life poster to go into our Winter Life Gallery.

Question

The Big Question:

  • How does snow change my daily life in Winter?

More questions:

  • What do I already know about snow?
  • How do I feel about snow?
  • What information about snow can I find in books?
  • What information about snow can I find on the Internet?
  • What information can I learn about snow by using my senses--looking, touching, and listening?

Gather and Sort

1. First, let's create a beautiful Flurry of Ideas to show everything we already know.

2.  Now, let's explore some library books about snow and add new facts to our Flurry of Ideas.

3.  Together, we can read Snowflake Bentley, by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, to learn more about snow and add even more information to our Flurry of Ideas.

4.  We can learn even more about snow by visiting the Snowflake Bentley website.  We will find a picture of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley there.  If we click on the word "snowflake," we can visit a gallery of his snowflake pictures!

5.  Let's check and make sure we have put all of our knowledge into our Flurry of Ideas!

Now that we have all visited our Snow Museum, let's talk about what we have learned.

SNOW AFFECTS OUR LIVES:  How is our daily life changed when it snows?

HOW WE FEEL ABOUT SNOW:  What do you like most about snow?  What do you like least about snow?  Why?
