Students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the interactions of matter and energy and the energy transformations that occur.

Maryland Library Media State Voluntary Curriculum

2A
1. Match resources to topic of interest or need.
3A
1. Students will use print resources efficiently and effectively.
3. Students will use computer/online/digital resources efficiently and effectively.

1. Make decisions to facilitate effective communication of ideas.

Maryland Science Learning Outcomes and Indicators   Students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the interactions of matter and energy and the energy transformations that occur.
describe an observed change in the position and motion of objects in terms of starting conditions, type of change, and ending conditions, using words, diagrams, or graphs
describe ways in which heat energy can be produced (e.g., by burning, mixing two materials together, or using electric currents)
give examples of materials that conduct heat energy better than others
explain that heat energy moves from a warm object to a cooler object by contact or at a distance until they reach the same temperature
compare conductors and nonconductors of electricity
construct a simple electric circuit that provides a pathway so that energy can move between a source (battery) and an object (bulb and/or bell)
explain that magnets exert a force that attracts or repels other magnets and attracts objects containing iron
explain that an electric circuit produces a magnetic effect (i.e., electromagnet)

Maryland Reading Learner Outcomes and Indicators   Students examine, construct and extend the meaning of a variety of self-selected and assigned text (traditional and electronic) by applying a range of reading strategies and analytic techniques.

A student will be able to:

use prior knowledge and ideas presented in texts to make and confirm predictions
evaluate new information and hypotheses by testing them against known information and ideas
reorganize information from the text into a different form (charts, drawings, or graphic organizers)

AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner

Learners use skills, resources and tools to:

    • Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
    • Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.
    • Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.
