Dear Teacher,

The content and activities in this research model are geared towards kindergarten students, however the text is not appropriate for emergent readers.  Therefore, you should involve your students in locating sight words, but essentially they will follow along as you read aloud.  Here are some specific things to keep in mind:

bullet

With the exception of the Kidspiration picture sort, it is suggested that you print and copy the documents for the students to write/color on.

bullet

Print the completed Kidspiration picture sorts and display them on a bulletin board that will make the students proud!

bullet

A majority of the internet sites are intended for teachers to read aloud, although they include great pictures for the students to look at.  There is one interactive quiz that most kindergarteners can do independently.  Differentiate by having them work in pairs.

bullet

For Step #3 in the Gather and Sort section, it is recommended that you choose a book about living things that focuses on basic needs for survival.  During the experiment, you should guide discussion to also focus on basic needs.

bullet

Depending upon the writing abilities of your students, they can use pictures and inventive spelling independently OR you can create a large T-chart together as a class.  The same is true for the Venn Diagram.

bullet

Be creative with the dioramas--use glitter, pom-poms, beads, dry cereal, or other craft items to represent water, food, and shelter.
