Oz Family Values

Step Three Exhibition

In this step, you will prepare and present your information about values and symbols.
Use your database or table to help you synthesize your research and prepare your symbolic device. To synthesize means to bring pieces together to make a new whole. In other words, you will take your pieces of research information and create a whole new product to show what you have learned.

Before you begin, recall the questions you were asked to consider about how people have used symbols to represent values. Some of the questions were:

  • How do values differ from culture to culture?
  • How have symbols been used to represent these values in different ways?
  • How and why do values change over time?

Decision Making Process

You have two important decisions to make before you begin creating the final product.

You need to decide what kind of symbolic device you will make to represent your family. Will it be a shield? A stamp? A quilt?

You also need to decide which values are important to represent on the shield. Courage? Caring? Responsibility?

In order to make these important decisions look over all of the information you have gathered from print resources, Internet resources, and human resources.

 Using Graphic Organizers

You may want to use a graphic organizer to help you make a decision about the values you will represent and the type of symbolic device that will represent your family.

 DECISION MAKING FOR ________________________

 Pros  Cons

One decision making graphic organizer is designed like a T-chart. Label the top of the chart with the value or device you are considering. List reasons for making that choice in the pros column. List reasons against making that choice in the cons column. If you end up with more pros than cons, the device or value is a good choice for your project.

 Choice 1  Choice 2  Choice 3  Choice 4
 Criterion 1
 Criterion 2
 Criterion 3

Another decision making graphic organizer looks like a grid. List all of the possibilities(choices) across the top. Then think of criteria you can use to evaluate the choices. Rate the choices based on the evaluation criteria. Look for the choice that receives the most high scores.

Here are some questions you may ask yourself about the type of device you will make.

1. What are my choices of type of device to create?

2. Do I have or can I find all of the materials I need to make it?

3. Do I know enough about this device in order to make it?

4. Will it make an attractive and easy to understand presentation?

Here are questions you may ask yourself about the symbols that you will include.

1. Do I know what values my family wants to preserve?

2. Can I make symbols that will clearly represent these values?

3. Have I gathered information to support my choice of values?

When you have made these important decisions, you are ready to make your symbolic device and prepare your presentation. Follow these steps to make your symbolic device and prepare your presentation.

Gather all of the materials you will need.

Plan the time you will need to create the device. (Check with your teacher for a due date.)

Make the symbolic device.

Prepare your database or table to support your choice of symbols.

Practice an oral presentation of your information.
