  • Standards for the English Language Arts
  • Standards for School Mathematics, Pre-K - 12
    • Read the Overview; then use the Next arrow to examine the 5 content standards and 5 process standards.
  • National Science Education Standards
  • Curriculum Standards for Social Studies

3. Student Activity
  • Select a core subject that you might consider teaching in the future: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or
    Social Studies.
  • Use the sources on Slide 2 to examine the content standards for this subject.
  • Use this chart to analyze the content standards for your subject; you are looking for evidence that these standards support or do not support the goals and purposes of education as defined in class.
    • Refer to the goals for education on page 84 of Effective Teaching Methods and to the purposes for education on Resource Sheet 3.1 as you complete your analysis.

4. Assessment Activity
  • Consider the results of your content standards analysis in order to make a generalization in response to the essential question:
  • Do the national content standards for (this subject) support the goals and purposes of education?
  • Support your response with details from your analysis notes.
  • Your response may be graded using this scoring tool.

5. Enrichment Activities
  • Analyze the Standards for the 21st Century Learner or the National Educational Technology Standards for Students to determine if these standards support the goals and purposes for education as defined in class. Use the same chart that you used for the content standards analysis.
  • Examine the standards in the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum for the subject you researched. Compare these state standards to the national standards to determine how these are related.
