Essential Question

Potter at wheel

onas, the protagonist in The Giver, lives in what seems
to be a perfect world.  Everything is under control.  There
is no war or fear or pain or emotion.  There is no past.
There are no choices.  Everyone is assigned a role in the
Community.

Upon turning 12, Jonas is chosen to receive special
training from The Giver.  Only The Giver holds the memories
of the true history, pains, and pleasures of life.  Now Jonas
knows the truth about the Community and has decided to
take action.

You have noticed something in your community that you believe needs to be changed.  Now is your chance to be an agent for change just as Jonas was in The Giver.  How will you make a difference in your community?  How will you “give back” to your community?  How will you persuade your community that change is desirable and possible?  How will you present and gather support for your ideas?

How can an individual shape his/her community?

Task and Product

Handshake, cooperation

Conduct research on a community issue you feel strongly about. You will need to find out background on the problem in general, how it impacts your community and how it could be solved.

Design an action plan to correct the problem. You will present your action plan at a town meeting and will need to explain how it will work.

Write a persuasive essay outlining a problem faced by your community, its impact on residents' lives, and a possible solution.

The most difficult part of a research assignment is knowing where to begin! You may feel overwhelmed by the assignment, the vast amounts of information, all the reading you will need to do, and the decisions you must make in order to do well on this assignment.

Town Meeting: Now is the time to present your ideas. Tips on Public Speaking may help ou feel less nervous.

Reflection: Complete a PQP chart (Praise, Question, Polish). This chart will be used to give feedback to your classmates. As you listen to others at the town meeting, think about how effective the essays were in persuading you that an issue was important. What techniques did students use to enhance their argument?
