CIRCULATORY CIRCLES

Research Scenario

You have one more week of school and you think you are "home-free", no more work. However, when you get to class, your teacher has one last assignment. The local health fair is rapidly approaching and your teacher would like for you to create a presentation on the heart to present at the fair.

Essential Question: In order to have a well functioning circulatory system, why is it necessary to have a healthy heart?

Task

In order to compile information about the heart, you must research it and all its parts. You will have to present your findings at the local health fair in the form of a multimedia presentation. You may work alone or you may choose to work with a partner.

Step 1- As a pre-assessment, complete the "Do You Know" quiz.

Step 2 - Use the "Heart Valve" worksheet to help with organizing.

Step 3 - Your post-assessment is to complete the cardiovascular quiz.

Product

Using Powerpoint or Kid Pix, you must create a multimedia presentation that contains at least 5 slides.

On slide 1, introduce presenters and topic.

On slides 2 and 3, identify the parts of the heart and their function(s).

On slide 4, list facts about the circulatory system or any of its parts. At least two facts must be about the heart.

On slide 5, conclude with a paragraph describing what the circulatory system does for the body.

Your teacher may also assign a video documentary which should include the information above.

In addition to your multimedia presentation, you must create a poster and brochure illustrating what you've learned about the circulatory system.

Questions

Essential Question:

In order to have a well functioning circulatory system, why is it necessary to have a healthy heart?

Subsidiary Questions:

  • What is the circulatory system?
  • What parts make up the heart?
  • What are the functions of each individual part of the heart?
  • Why are all parts of the heart important to the circulatory system?

Gather & Sort

Use a variety of resources for gathering information about the circulatory system.

Sort your research findings on the circulatory system using

graphic organizer or note cards

Be sure to avoid plagiarism and keep track of your resources for a bibliography.

Organize

Analyze your research notes to determine if you have adequate information to answer the essential question.

Synthesize your findings by making a rough draft of your multimedia presentation, poster, and brochure.

  • What new insights have emerged about the heart and/or circulatory system?
  • Which facts are the most compelling and would have the greatest impact on your audience or people attending the health fair?
  • Which facts are unnecessary or irrelevant when explaining background information about the heart?

Evaluate your finished product by using the following questions:

  • Do you feel you are well informed on your topic in order to present to the class?
  • Have you gathered enough information about your topic to create a product?
  • Are your details organized and sufficient.

Conclusion

Presentation: Share your multimedia presentation along with your poster and brochure with the class.

Reflection: What have you learned about the heart that you did not know before?

What can people do to be heart healthy?

Extension Activity: Each of your classmates is challenged to create a slogan for the American Heart Association that addresses the importance of a healthy heart. Using a voting ballot, the class will select the top three slogans which will be sent to the association.
