Dem Bones, Dem Bones are going to walk around --the human body!

Research Process

Directions to Students

  Scenario

The University of Maryland Hospital has asked your class to create a picture book explaining the body systems for small children who come into the emergency room either sick or injured.

The pediatricians know that knowledge is power.  They think that knowledge of how body systems work will help their patients be less fearful and may help them make healthy choices.

Essential Question:  How does knowledge of how our body systems function empower us to make changes in our everyday life?

Task and Product

Task

Your teacher will place you in a group with three other students who will co-author the book with you.  Each person in the group will choose one of the body systems to research:

Body Systems
Circulatory
Respiratory
Digestive
Skeletal
Muscular
Nervous

The Product

Your group, as well as, the pediatric patients, are counting on you to become an expert on the body system you chose.  After you complete your research, each person in the group will author and illustrate at least three pages for the picture book.

Your book must contain the following pages for each of the body systems your group researched:

a page that describes the body system and its different parts.

a second page that explains how the body system functions.

a third page that describes how the body system works to fight sickness and heal injuries.

Working cooperatively, the group will create the title page, a group biography page, and a "Note to the Reader" page that explains how knowledge of the way our body systems function empowers us.

Remember that each page must be illustrated with an original drawing or diagram that demonstrates the main idea.

Your teacher may decide to assign an alternative presentation from the following list:

bullet video commercial
pamphlet
poster
multimedia presentation ( PowerPoint, Hyperstudio, or Kid Pix)
web page
other products as approved by your teacher

Assessments

You will be graded on your daily work on the research process as well as on your final product.

Daily (Formative)
Nonfiction Picture Book
Other options:
Pamphlet
Poster
Multimedia Presentation (ex. PowerPoint)
Web page
Other products

Question

Essential Question:

Essential Question:  How does knowledge of how our body systems function empower us to make changes in our everyday life?

Jump start your thinking! Here are some sample questions for each topic; think of some more that fit your topic.

What are the different parts of the body system?

How does each part contribute to the job the whole system does?

How does the body system function?

Why is the system important to the body?

When does this body system function?

What is unique about this body system?

How does the system work to fight sickness and heal injuries?

Organizational Helps

Gather and Sort

Gather information from a variety of sources.

Sort your findings using this graphic organizer when taking notes or follow the notetaking format suggested by your teacher.

Organize

Analyze your research notes to determine if you have answered your part of the essential question.

Essential Question:  How does knowledge of how our body systems function empower us to make changes in our everyday life?

Synthesize your findings by creating a first draft of your product.

What new insights have emerged about your topics?
Which facts are the most compelling and would have the greatest impact on your audience?

Evaluate the effectiveness of your research for the task using

Have you gathered sufficient details about your topic?
Are your details organized in the right categories or sub-topics to make sense for your audience?
Are you ready to create your product?

Presentation

Share the information you gathered with the other members of your group.  Decide the sequence you will use to introduce and explain the body systems.  Working individually, create your three pages.

Remember that your book must contain the following pages for each of the body systems your group researched:

a page that describes the body system and its different parts.

a second page that explains how the body system functions.

a third page that describes how the body system works to fight sickness and heal injuries.

Be sure to illustrate each page with a drawing or diagram that clearly communicates the main idea.
Then work cooperatively with your group members to write the "Note to the Reader" page where you explain how knowledge of our body systems affects our everyday life.  (For example, you may explain to the pediatric patients that knowing how their body works can help them take better care of their health.)
Create the cover, including a title and artwork.
Publish your book!
