the partnership
In 1997, the College of Education at Towson University launched its first School Library Media Cohort in partnership
with the Baltimore County Public Schools. This partnership developed in order to address the the Office of Library Information
Service's projections that there would be a future shortage of certified library media specialists. The shortage has not only
impacted Baltimore County Public Schools but is also a national problem of increasing proportions. During the time period
from 1997 to the present, ten cohorts have been organized. The Towson University cohort has served as a statewide model
for preparing a quality workforce in school library media centers in Maryland.
Teachers interested in making a career change to the school library media profession are urged to talk with a school library
media specialist in Baltimore County Public Schools and/or contact Della Curtis, Coordinator, Office of Library Information
Services.
