100 Book Challenge

What is 100 Book Challenge?

100 Book Challenge is a research-based system that connects independent reading practice to local, state, and national standards.  Students from 36 BCPS elementary schools in kindergarten through Grade 5 participate in the program.  It combines access to great books, a leveling system, reading at school, reading at home, accountability, and on-going professional development to involve the entire school community in achieving measurable results in raising reading test scores and developing proficient, lifelong readers.

What are the key components of 100 Book Challenge?

  • Students self-select fiction and nonfiction books at their developmentally appropriate independent reading levels to read at school and at home.
  • Teachers set a purpose for reading through daily Readers’ Workshops to connect classroom instruction to independent reading.
  • Students independently apply reading strategies or skills while reading for 15-30 minutes.  Each 15 minutes of reading equals 1 step.
  • Teachers conduct one-on-one conferences with students identifying strengths and needs.
  • Students share application of reading strategies or skills with partners and/or entire class.
  • Students read at home for 15-30 minutes.
  • Schools host annual Reading Nights to share information about independent reading with families and to support parents in serving as their children’s “reading coaches” at home.
  • Schools present students with rewards for every 100 steps read (25 hours).
