The Office of Classification is part of the Department of Human Resources and is responsible for administering classification and compensation plans that provide for the efficient, equitable, and consistent classification and compensation of employees and the recruitment of qualified applicants. The office also assists with the recruitment of qualified applicants through the development and maintenance of class specifications and job descriptions.

The only official class specifications and job descriptions are those that have been developed, approved, controlled, and distributed by the Office of Classification.  To request a class specification or job description, please contact the Classification Specialist.

Additionally, the Office of Classification:

  • Receives and reviews requested reclassifications from employees and department heads for individual positions and groups of classes.
  • Conducts job analyses and organizational studies to determine proper classification of positions.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates official class specifications and job descriptions for the system.
  • Develops, maintains and updates essential functions, minimum requirements, retirement system eligibility, and Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exempt or non-exempt status.
  • Provides guidance on compliance with the FLSA to employees and supervisory personnel
  • Reviews vacancy announcements prior to posting to ensure accuracy of vacancy, duties, responsibilities, and minimum qualifications.
  • Reviews BCPS' compensation plan on an annual basis to ensure fair and consistent salary practices, within available resources.
  • Consults with administrators on issues regarding office reorganizations and staffing requirements.
