The Office of Elementary Social Studies guides the development, implementation, and assessment of social studies instruction; provides professional development for elementary teachers; serves as a liaison for the school system and the community; and facilitates extra-curricular programs for students.

Services provided by the Office of Elementary Social Studies include:

• Development of curriculum guides for social studies courses
• Development of assessment instruments to measure student achievement and inform instruction
• Coordination of teacher training programs with colleges, universities, and professional organizations
• Partnerships with community institutions and governmental agencies to provide services for teachers and students
• Implementation of student programs such as Black Saga
