Office of Elementary Social Studies

The mission of the Office of Elementary Social Studies is to provide leadership and support for elementary social studies educators as they teach students the fundamental content knowledge, skills, and democratic values necessary for fulfilling the duties of citizenship in a participatory democracy.

Social studies educators provide students with a foundation in history, geography, economics, civics, and multiculturalism. The combination of these elements empowers students to make decisions and solve problems as they face the challenges of functioning in a global society.


Highlights of the Office of Elementary Social Studies program include:

  • Baltimore County Public Schools students consisting leading the state-wide Black Saga competition.
  • Receiving a $1 million Teaching American History federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop and implement a program to improve student achievement in American history.

  • Frequent educational field trips.
