World Music 6 comprised of Music theory and the identification and performance of
music from various World Cultures (India, South America, Japan, Mexico,
the Caribbean, Laos, Norway, Italy, and China).
Students are actively involved in performance on recorders, Latin percussion,
and MIE electronic keyboards.
Instrumental (Winds/ Strings/ Percussion) includes sustaining an even tone on instrument (or an even buzz roll)
for 15 seconds and demonstrating correct posture, hand position, and instrument
angle while performing songs written in an octave range; identifying and
defining ¾ time and playing a Bb concert scale and arpeggio on a keyboard
mallet instrument; and sight- reading 4 measure patterns in 2/ 3 ,3/ 4,
and 4/ 4 time.
Choral includes development of correct singing pedagogy, posture, vowels
ah/ ee/ oh, unison and two part harmony, rhythmic notations in 4/ 4 time,
and sight- singing stepwise & sol- mi in the key of C major.
Grade 7
World Music 7
Comprised of Music theory and the identification and performance of music
from various World Cultures (Africa, Middle East, Western Europe, Eastern
Europe). Students are actively involved in performance on African percussion,
recorders, and MIE electronic keyboards.
Instrumental (Winds/Percussion)
Includes sustaining an even tone on instrument (or even buzz roll) for
20 seconds and demonstrating correct posture, hand position, and instrument
angle; playing Eb and F concert scales and arpeggios; sight reading rhythmic
notations up to an eighth rest (winds) or sixteenth and eighth patterns
(percussion)
Instrumental (Strings)
Includes sustaining an even tone while moving from one string to another;
performing quarter note bowings; performing the D and A major scales and
arpeggios and the G major scale in thirds; sight reading rhythmic notations
up to an eighth rest.
Choral
Includes development of correct singing pedagogy, posture; vowels oo,
eh; SA and SAC harmony; rhythmic notations in ¾ time; sight reading
rhythmic notations up to sixteenth notes; sight singing stepwise &
sol-mi-do in the key of C major, music literature should be on Level II.
Grade 8
American Music 8
Comprised of Music theory and the identification and performance of music
from the history of the United States (Native American, Colonial period,
Early and later jazz, Early and later folk music, hip-hop, and musical
theatre). Students are actively involved in performance on guitars and
MIE electronic keyboards. Hello Dolly! is the musical studied.
Instrumental (Winds/Percussion)
Includes demonstrating the ability to sustain four measure phrases with
correct posture, hand position, and instrument angle; Perform an even
buzz roll for 30 seconds (percussion); playing Eb and F concert scales
in thirds, and the Bb chromatic scale ascending and descending; sight
reading rhythmic notations up to eighth sixteenth and eighth patterns
(winds) or sixteenth rests (percussion)
Instrumental (Strings)
Includes sustaining an even tone throughout the length of the bow; performing
the D and A major scales in thirds; perform the chromatic scale ascending
and descending; performing rhythmic notations using syncopation, sight
reading notations up to sixteenth and eighth patterns.
Choral
Includes development of correct singing pedagogy, posture; vowels ih,
aw; SAB harmony; demonstrating dynamic levels from pp - ff; sight reading
rhythmic notations through dotted quarter-eighth notes; sight singing
2 part melodies in the key of C major or G major with steps and skips;
music literature should be on Level II or III.
