High School Music Curriculum

Music For Life

Course 45.1400.0 1 credit

Students explore the elements of music that will enable them to create and perform their own music. They examine a variety of music including pop, jazz, classical, rap, blues, country, rock, and Broadway, as well as several other musical styles. Included are experiences with keyboards, percussion, film and music composition and arranging.

Note: Successful completion of this course satisfies the one credit fine arts graduation requirement.

Creative Musical Theatre

Course 45.5550.0 1/2 credit

This course presents an overview of the history of American musical theatre. Included are new trends in musical theatre; performance practices and problems in acting, speaking, singing, body movements, and dancing; and technical design, including make-up, costuming, scenery, and lighting.

Note: Successful completion of the course satisfies 1/2 of the fine arts graduation requirement.

Chorus

Womens’ Chorus Course 45.4310.0 1 credit

Choral Ensemble Course 45.4210.0 1 credit

Chorus Course 45.4220.0 1 credit

The various choruses are offered to students interested in singing. The courses provide an opportunity for musical growth through the study and performance of a variety of vocal literature.

Note: Schools offer these courses under various titles and with varying procedures for selecting participants. Successful completion of one full credit of chorus satisfies the fine arts graduation requirement.

Concert Choir [Honors Course]

Course 45.4450.4 (H) 1 credit

Chorale [Honors Course]

Course 45.4500.4 (H) 1 credit

Advanced choral ensembles which will study and perform a variety of challenging vocal literature. Students will develop skills and confidence in singing an individual part while working closely with others in a group.

Note: Schools may require an audition for acceptance into this course. Successful completion of one full credit satisfies the fine arts graduation requirement.

Orchestra and/or Band

Concert Orchestra Course 45.3010.0 1 credit  

Symphonic Orchestra Course 45.3020.4 (H) 1 credit

Concert Band Course 45.2020.0 1 credit

Symphonic Band Course 45.2030.0 1 credit

Band and orchestra are offered to students interested in playing and who have the necessary background for the particular group.

The course provides an opportunity for musical growth through the study and performance of a variety of instrumental literature.

Requirements for admission may be selective.

Symphonic Winds [Honors Course]

Wind Ensemble [Honors Course]

Course 45.2400.4 (H) 1 credit

Advanced instrumental ensembles which will study and perform a variety of challenging literature. Students will develop skills and confidence in playing an individual part while working closely with others in a group.

Guitar

Students are given the opportunity to study music through performance on the guitar. They will learn to read musical notation as they acquire performance skills and play various styles of music.

Jazz Ensemble

Course 45.2410.0 1 credit

Students will study and perform a variety of literature ranging from big band swing charts to latin and rock arrangements. The fundamentals of improvisation will be taught along with the interpretation of jazz notation. The ensemble will also be involved in presenting public performances throughout the school year.

Class Piano

Level I Course 45.2610.0 1/2 credit

In a group setting, students will acquire the basic skills required to play the piano. Improvising, transposing, and music reading are taught in order to provide the skills necessary to pursue musical interests.

Introduction to Music Technology

Course 45.8010.0 (T) 1/2 credit (T)

This course will explore the latest innovations and advances in the field of Music Technology. Topics will include digital sampling, sequencing, multi-track recording, MIDI, and computer generated composition. In a laboratory setting, students will use technology to compose, edit, arrange, perform, and record their own music. The ability to read music is not required. Successful completion of this course satisfies 1/2 of the technology education graduation credit requirement. Students should pair Music Technology with Technology Foundations Systems in order to fulfill the one credit technology education graduation requirement.

Music Technology II

Course 45.8020.0 1/2 credit

Students will access current technology and apply technological concepts to particate in the creative process and create original musical compositions. In a laboratory setting, participants will utilize music notation software to formulate, edit, and print their own compositions. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Music Technology 45.8010.0)

Music Theory I

Music Theory improves students' basic understanding of music, especially as it contributes directly to appreciation and performance. It includes study in music reading and notation, ear training, keyboard training, harmony, analysis, and composition.

Gifted and Talented Music

Course 45.5010.5 -Level I (G/T) 1 credit

Course 45.5020.5 -Level II (G/T) 1 credit

Course 45.5030.5 -Level III (G/T) 1 credit

Course 45.5040.5 -Level IV (G/T) 1 credit

Participants are provided with opportunities to grow in areas which enrich and extend participation in school performing ensembles.

Included are individually guided experiences in community based arts performances, school and community mentorship and leadership opportunities, creative musical composition, recording technology, music careers, and research.

Note: Up to four years of Gifted and Talented credit may be received by a student enrolled in a performing ensemble. A student may enroll in Level 1 at the beginning of any school year and must have completed each lower level before moving to the next level.
