Elementary School Music Curriculum

Listed below are some of the core concepts studied
in each grade level through a required curriculum that includes
singing, movement, listening activities, and playing classroom
instruments.

Grade One
Includes the study of steady beat, long and short; ta, ti-ti; quarter
rest; AB and ABA form, phrases; sol, mi, la
Grade Two
Includes the study of duple and triple meter, barline, quarter note,
whole note and rest, half note and rest, dotted half note, do, re, step
and skip
Grade Three
Includes the study of simple meter signatures; ti-ri-ti-ri and ta-i-ti;
low la, low sol; pitch letter names, treble clef; round; D.C. al Fine
Grade Four
Includes the study of metric counting; ti-ti-ri and ti-ri-ti; high
do, fa; partner songs; rondo; overture
Grade Five
Includes the study of syn-co-pah, dotted eighth note followed by the
sixteenth; high ti, low ti, scales C, G, F; descant; chord building
for I, IV, V in the keys of C, G, and F
Choral
Demonstrate correct posture and breath support when singing; perform
vowels and consonants with a unified sound; perform Kodaly hand signs
while singing; identify and perform songs in simple meter; identify
ascending and descending melodies, perform unison and two part harmony;
identify soprano voice and its range
Instrumental (Winds, Strings, and Percussion)
Produce a characteristic tone on the instrument; perform necessary
fingerings to produce a one octave range; perform the rhythmic notations
through quarter rest; identify 2/4 and 4/4 meters; sight read as an
ensemble, four measure patterns using notations up to a quarter note
(winds and strings) or an eighth note (percussion), play a multiple
bounce/buzz roll (percussion)
