The Customer Support Center receives many
call a year related to data loss. When a caller loses data the
first questions that a CSC Technician will ask is, "When
did you do your last backup?" Unfortunately many times there
is no back up. You work very hard creating documents and storing
data on your computer. Take a few minutes every week to back up
your data. When you have a problem the recovery time will be lessened
when you have a recent back up.

How do I back my data up?
- Floppy Disk -
There are many ways to back up user data. The most common way
is to save information to a floppy disk. Floppy disks are cheap
and easy to use. There are some draw backs to floppy disks however.
They don't hold much information. Many Word documents can be stored
but most Power Point presentations and other files with a lot
of graphics may rapidly become too large for the 1.4MB capacity.
Also, floppy disks can go bad easily. Disks should be replaced
after some time and great care should be taken to ensure that
floppy disks are protected from magnetic fields and static electricity.
To back up to floppy disk just open up the folder on your computer
that holds your documents that you wish to back up. Then open
up My Computer. Put the floppy disk into the disk drive and drag
the contents you wish to back up to the A:\ drive in the My Computer
window.
- Flash Drives -
You may see your colleagues wearing these relatively new products
around their necks on lanyards. Flash drives are small USB devices
that hold many times more than a standard floppy disk. These devices
plug into a USB port on a PC or Mac and then work the same way
a floppy disk does. These are great for large presentations and
carrying work from school to your home. And they are great for
backing up data!
- CD Back up - Many
schools now have CD burners that allow users to back data up to
a CD R or RW. If your school received any Dell GX 270 machines
in the latest roll out then you have a CD burner.
Can I use the server in my school
to back up my data?
- Many schools have now been imaged and/or staff members are logging
onto the Domain. If this is the case at your school then you can
save to the Dell server. When you log onto the Domain you have
access to a Home Drive that has been given the letter H:\ under
My Computer. This web page entitled Setting
My Documents to H:\ After Imaging will automatically point
the My Documents folder on your PC to the server. The server backs
itself up daily so it is very reliable. We still recommend
that users back very important files up to another device to provide
even more protection against data loss.
