Customer Support CenterService Pack 4 Fix for Rev2/Rev3 Machines

2/26/04 - CSC is now reporting a problem with some Windows 2000 machines that are attempting to update to Service Pack 4 (SP4). Computers that have BCPS image rev2 and rev3 are unable to update to SP4 because of a core system (kernel) error. (See graphic below)
SP4 kernal error

CSC has a fix for this problem but it is very time consuming. It requires that a 135 MB zip file be downloaded to the machine with this problem and two files be run from the zip file after it is decompressed. NOTE: CSC is not requiring that users do this fix. We are still working on a global solution for this problem.

There are two methods available to complete the SP4 fix for rev2 and rev3 images. Users can download a 135MB zip file that contains all of the files needed to install SP4. Users with Roxio software and a CD burner can download a 153MB ISO file that contains all of the files needed to burn CDs that contain the SP4 fix and update files.

No matter which method used, after decompressing the files you will see two batch files: one called runmefirst and the other runmesecond along with other files and folders. (see graphic below)
SP4 file contents
Run the runmefirst file. After a few seconds the machine will reboot. After the machine restarts, log back in as administrator and run runmesecond. This file will take some time as it contains the SP4 update files. After the machine restarts the service pack install is complete.

NOTE: After running the SP4 updates the machine will still be infected if the virus was present before hand. The SP4 update eliminates the vulnerability but does not clean the virus.
