Customer Support CenterNew Server (FS1) Information

In September, October, and November of 2006 all BCPS Domain Controllers (DC1 Servers) will be replaced with FS1 Servers. This will change the server that schools image from and the location of the H:\ drives and other network shares. Secondary schools, that already have DC-0 servers doing Active Directory, DNS and DHCP tasks will eventually have the old DC-1 removed. Elementary schools will keep the DC-1 server which will be set up to only do Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP services.

The following changes will occur when the new server is deployed:

  • Building Liaisons and Alternates will be contacted two days prior to the FS1 being cut over. The new server may arrive in the building many days prior to the cut over date.
  • The new server will be named schoolcode-fs1 so Catonsville High School's new server name will be chs0174-fs1.
  • All new servers will be cut over and activated at night at around 6 pm. All staff members should log off of their computers the day of the cut over. All computers should be restarted the day after the cut over. Failure to do so may result in network shares being unavailable.
  • Backup tapes not needed in the new servers. All backups are done automatically with no intervention by the liaison.
  • Elementary schools which will be keeping the old DC1 server will no longer need to swap backup tapes.
  • Any short cuts that were created to access the server must be changed to reflect the new server name. The DC-1 will stay in the building so liaisons may be able to access the old server but the Deployment Console will not be present.
  • It may take a few days for the Deployment Console to be activated after the server is cut-over. Contact your Area Team Leader via email if the Console is unavailable to you after a cut over. If you do not know who your Area Team Leader is please call 4672.
  • Staff members that are split between several buildings and therefore have manual mappings to network shares in buildings must redo these connections.
  • Macintosh shares will not be set up on the new FS1 server. If your building needs to have Mac shares please contact Michael Davis, Shawn Sears, or Mick Marcellino
