Customer Support CenterDomain Controllers - Tape Backup System
The Customer Support Center has received many requests regarding the purchase and use of the Back Up tapes. These Back Up tapes are for the DC-1 Server and, if available, the FS-1 server.
As far as the purchase of these tapes, it is the responsibility of the school to obtain these tapes in much the same manner as the purchase of toner cartridges. You may purchase tapes with a procurement card from any of the local computer stores including Comp USA, Data Networks, Staples, and Office Depot
.
  • Below is the front of the Dell PowerEdge 2500 Server that is most common in our buildings. It can be found at or near the Main Distribution Facility (MDF)

  • The front cover of the server may be locked. If the front cover is locked the keys can usually be found attached to a small ring at the back of the server. Once the server is unlocked the front cover can be opened by pulling firmly at the top. The front cover will open to the front much like a draw bridge opening over a moat. Once the front cover is down, you will have access to everything. Unless instructed by the Customer Support Center, the server should NEVER BE TURNED OFF.

  • The Tape Back up unit is located at the upper right corner of the server. The back up takes place over night and is done automatically. Tapes should be replaced during the school day every Friday. Alternate tapes every week to prevent data loss. To eject the tape, press the Tape Eject Button as indicated on the graphic on the right. At this time the “in use” light will flash as the tape prepares to be ejected. This is not like ejecting a video tape and can take upwards to 5 minutes to complete.

  • Notice that the tape is now ready to be removed.

  • Since Baltimore County uses several different tape drives we are recommending that you purchase a brand that will work with all units. The Imation Black Watch DLTtapeIV ½” Cartridge Tape is the one we know will work in all of our servers. The tape should be a 40/80 Gigabyte size to accommodate your back up data at your location. Click here for the current prices from DataNetworks. NOTE: The quote shows the purchase price for one tape and multiple tapes. The quote is to be used for reference. Call DataNetworks directly to order a replacement tape.
  • From time-to-time the tape drive will need to be cleaned. There is an Alert light on the front of the server that will glow amber when the drive needs to be cleaned. Take note of the light when changing the tape each Friday. If the light is on insert a cleaning cartridge into the drive after removing the data cartridge. The drive will run for several minutes and automatically eject the cleaning tape when done. Replace the data drive after the cleaning. The cleaning tapes come with a small card that should be marked each time the tape is used. When the card has been completed, purchase a new cleaning tape. Click here for a quote from DataNetworks for cleaning tape purchases.
