Dental FAQ's
- I am in the CIGNA DHMO individual plan and I really
like the plan. Do I have to change?
No, you may continue to participate in your current plan.
- If I currently have coverage through MRTA or some other
plan, can I enroll?
You should compare your current benefits and costs versus the
new dental plans offered though BCPS. If you have already paid
your quarterly premium beyond January 1, you may be able to get
a refund from your current carrier or you may elect to join the
BCPS dental plan. Additionally, if you are in the middle of treatment
you should finish your treatment with your current carrier. Typically,
insurance companies will not pay for services until they have
been completed and new plans will not pay for services that began
prior to the effective date of coverage.
- If I want to change from MRTA, will you automatically
cancel coverage with them?
No, we are not affiliated with MRTA. You must notify
them of your request to cancel coverage.
- If I do not enroll now, can I sign up later?
Yes, you may enroll at any time. Forms must be received by the
10th of the month for coverage to start the 1st of the following
month.
- I do not have medical coverage through BCPS, can I
still sign up for dental?
Yes, your dental election is independent of your medical election.
- My dentist is not in the CareFirst Regional Dental
PPOnetwork is there a traditional plan available?
Yes, the Carefirst Regional Dental Traditional dental plan is
a traditional plan. This means you can go to any dentist.
- Which plan provides better benefits, Regional PPO
or regional Traditional?
The covered benefits are the same but the annual maximum is higher
in the PPO plan. Remember, in the PPO plan you must
use a network dentist to get the highest level of benefits. Contact
your dentist to see if they participate in the plan.
- Is the dental plan offered to all retirees of Baltimore
County Public Schools?
Yes, all retirees and their eligible family members may enroll.
