Home Schooling
Dear Parent/Guardian:
I am writing in response to your request for information regarding home schooling. The Baltimore County Public School system supports home schooling in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR 13A.10.01.)
You can visit our website at: http://www.bcps.org. First click on OFFICES, then click on ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION, DROPOUT PREVENTION AND SUMMER SCHOOL. You’ll find the heading HOME SCHOOLING on the left. I am enclosing the following for your information and use:
After reviewing these materials, should you decide to instruct your child/children at home, please complete and return the Home Schooling Notification Form as instructed. Additionally, any questions you might have regarding non-public entities registered in Maryland may be directed to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Contact Ms. Denise Scott 410-767-0407 or visit their website at www.msde.state.md.us/nonpublic.
There are many organizations in Maryland that support home schoolers. Two of the largest groups are:
- Maryland Home Education Association (MHEA): Contact Mr. Manfred Smith 410-730-0073
- Christian Home Education Network, Inc. (CHEN): Contact CHEN at www.chenmd.org
Parents frequently request information regarding the curriculum and how to construct a home schooling program for their child/children. You may visit www.bcps.org/parents/ to find the Parent Summaries and Helpful Hints Pre K-Grade 5. Middle and High School curriculum can be viewed by accessing the Curriculum Objectives Articulated Instruction Module K-12 in the center of the Parents page. Baltimore’s Child has a comprehensive listing of Home School Curriculum on its website http://www.baltimoreschild.com. To access this information, do the following:
- Click on the picture of The Maryland Field Trip and Teachers’ Guide 2007-2008 in the upper left hand corner.
- Click on the Contents tab to display the guide.
- Click on the listings for Homeschool Curriculums and Homeschool Resources.
The Griggs University & International Academy and the Calvert Education Services, the only two Maryland accredited correspondence schools, are included in the curriculums link.
Please be advised that as a home schooling parent you can receive a “Teacher Loan” library card. You must provide the most recent home schooling letter from my office to your county library.
Students who are home schooled through Grade 12 do not receive a diploma from Baltimore County Public Schools. Diplomas can be awarded through accredited correspondence courses/schools or by the student passing the GED.
If my office can be of further assistance, please call 410-887-2896. Thank you for your interest, and best wishes for a successful year.
