Alternative Education and School Support Programs
Parent Responsibilities

Referral:

  1. As soon as you learn that your child will be absent from school for at least four consecutive weeks, contact your child's guidance counselor. The counselor will complete the School Referral.
  2. Obtain a copy of the Application for Instructional Program for Homebound or Hospitalized Student from your child's guidance counselor. Have the appropriate medical professional complete the form for medical or emotional conditions or pregnancy. You must also sign it and have the physician mail or fax it to the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center. As soon as the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center receives both referral forms, your child will be scheduled and contacted promptly by Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center personnel.

Chronically Ill Program:

  1. Chronically ill students are not assigned to the online program.  Instruction is only offered intermittently when there are two or more consecutive absences for a certified chronic condition.
  2. Obtain the books and work from the regular school teacher to have available for the home teacher.
  3. Ensure that a supervising adult is present during the home visit and that the tutor and the student have an appropriate place for instruction.
  4. When assignments are completed, return them to the regular school teacher.

Online Instruction:

  1. Monitor your child's attendance in the assigned classes.
  2. Monitor assignments that are to be turned in.
  3. Utilize the Moodle course management system as a communication tool for student grades and class attendance.
  4. Wednesdays are independent study days.  Students may need to meet with their teachers online independently or with other students during identified office hours or complete assignments independently in Moodle.
  5. Ensure that a supervising adult is present if a home visit is scheduled for extra help or enrichment. Also ensure that the teacher and student have an appropriate place for instruction.

One-to-One Instruction:

  1. Ensure that a supervising adult (21 years or older) is present during the home visit and that the tutor and the student have an appropriate place for instruction.
  2. Call the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center or the tutor before the scheduled home visit if your child is too ill to meet for a scheduled instructional session.

Absences:

  1. Call the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center (410-887-3222) before the scheduled class time if your child is unable to participate in the day's lesson. A written note is also required.  Excused absences include sickness, a doctor's visit, and a death in the family. Try to schedule appointments around your child's class time.
  2. For pregnant students, please notify the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center when your daughter delivers her baby. She is entitled to be absent for five school days after the birth of the baby.

Termination of the Program:

  1. Obtain a written note from your child's doctor indicating the date that your child may return to regular school.  Most schools require a note be given to the guidance counselor or school nurse before your child attends any classes.
  2. Notify the teachers at the Home and Hospital/e-Learning Center that your child will be returning to regular school.
