| Frequently
Asked Questions
- What is Home and Hospital? The Home and Hospital
Center provides education for Baltimore County students
who are unable to attend school for a minimum of four
weeks due to physical or emotional crisis. Students
will receive their instruction either through teleclass
teaching, individual tutoring, or Hospital Center
classes.
- Who is eligible for Home and Hospital Services?
Any student who is unable to attend school due
to physical or emotional crisis is eligible for services.
Referral forms can be obtained from the guidance department
at your home School.
- Does a student have to be out of school four
weeks before they are eligible? No. If a doctor
or school anticipates that a student's absence may
be for a period of several weeks, the referral process
may begin.
- What is the difference between Home and Hospital
and home Schooling? Home Schooling is a school
program administered at home by the student's parent
or guardian. The student on home Schooling is not
enrolled in a Baltimore County School. Home and Hospital
is a temporary service available to any county student
who is unable to attend his/her school due to physical
or emotional crisis. Referral forms are available
at your home School.
- Who are the teachers at The Home and Hospital
Center? There are currently eight certified full-time
Baltimore County teachers assigned to The Home and
Hospital Center. Other hourly teachers are hired as
the need arises.
- Do I ever get to meet my teachers? Yes. Your
teachers will visit you to bring materials and for
individual tutoring when necessary. A parent or guardian,
21 years or older, must be present when your teacher
visits.
- Will I be doing the same work as my classmates
in my home School? If you are placed on the teleclass
program, you will enter into the unit currently being
taught in teleclass. This unit may or may not be the
same one your classmates are receiving. If you are
receiving one-to-one instruction at home, your teacher
will contact your regular teacher for materials and
instruction. In treatment facilities, usually the
parents(s) bring work from the home School.
- Do students graduate from Home and Hospital?
No. Although some students may be using the Home and
Hospital service for an extended period of time, they
graduate from their home School.
- Who gives the Home and Hospital student a grade?
Home and Hospital students receive a grade from their
Home and Hospital teacher. That grade is sent to the
parent and to the home School. The home School teacher
averages the grade earned at Home and Hospital with
the grade earned at the home School. If the student
was in Home and Hopital for the entire quarter, then
the home School teacher will place that grade on the
report card. Excused and unexcused absences will also
be noted. Home and Hospital follows the Baltimore
County Public Schools attendance policy for grading
as indicated in the Behavior Handbook.
- How do I turn in my work? Each teacher has
different requirements. Some teachers grade oral responses.
Others require written work to be sent to the school
using electronic mail, fax, or US postal service.
Work may also be hand-delivered or picked up by the
teacher.
- How can a student be taught over the telephone?
Baltimore County Home and Hospital Center uses a conference
call system. Students in the same subject or grade
make a telephone call to their assigned teacher at
a scheduled time. All the students can hear their
teacher and their classmates talking. The class is
then conducted like a regular class using Baltimore
County Curriculum guides.
- Which classes are taught over the telephone?
The Academic Profile page lists the subjects currently
being taught over the telephone. Every effort is made
to teach students the courses that are required for
graduation.
- Do we observe the same holidays as the Baltimore
County School system? Yes, we do observe the same
holidays. Home and Hospital also observes professional
study days that are system-wide and noted in the school
calendar.
- What do we do about snow days or late openings?
The Home and Hospital day begins at 8:00 a.m. If county
schools open one hour late, Home and Hospital begins
at 9:00 a.m. If county schools open two hours late,
Home and Hospital begins at 10:00 a.m.
- What do we do about early closings? The Home
and Hospital Center doesn't always follow the Baltimore
County schedule for early closings. Contact your teacher
at your regular time unless you've been told differently.
- Do I have to take final exams? Yes. Usually
the exams will be taken at your home School, unless
there are extenuating medical circumstances. It is
the student's or parent's responsibility to contact
the home School and make arrangements for the student
to take the final exams.
- Why does it take so long for a student to get
on the program? The length of time depends on
how long it takes the parent, the doctor and the guidance
counselor to accurately complete and submit the required
referral forms to the Home and Hospital administrator.
- What do I do about the work I missed from my
home School before placement at Home and Hospital?
A student is responsible for completing his work
at his home School until he/she begins Home and Hospital
instruction.
- Will I take the functional test or MSPAP while
receiving service from Home and Hospital? Home
and Hospital does not administer standarized testing.
You must contact your guidance office to make arrangements
to take these tests at your home School.
