Visit the Parentmobile at a Community Block Party

What: Visitors board the Parentmobile to learn about BCPS' curriculum, at-home learning resources, the BCPS website, community resources, and resources to support families of students with special needs or limited English proficiency. Parents and guardians are invited to visit. No registration is required.

Monday, July 2

First day of annual school supply drive. Join in!

What: YOU can help ensure that all students get off to a great start next school year by participating in The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools ’ annual school supply drive – Tools for Schools. This year, there are multiple ways organizations and individuals can help – from hosting a school supply drive, volunteering time, or making a monetary donation. All school supplies are welcome. Those most needed are: 3-ring binders, markers, pencils, notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, erasers, scissors, sticky notes, folders, notebook paper, dividers, pens, rulers, glue/glue sticks, pencil cases, book bags, and reward stickers. In addition to signing up online to help, interested businesses/organizations can sign up by contacting Cindy Whitcomb at cwhitcomb@bcps.org. The school supply drive is part of the BCPS annual Back to School Involves You, Too! campaign in association with the Education Foundation of BCPS. Designed to garner community support for BCPS students and schools, the campaign this year also includes BCPSFest (a back-to-school festival), BCPS Day at Camden Yards, Early Entry Day, and more.

Summer library hours today at Essex Elementary

What: This year, 25 elementary school libraries in Baltimore County Public Schools are offering special summer hours during which students can check out books, write stories, use computers, and engage in makerspace and other activities. Essex Elementary will have library hours today.

Thursday, July 5

First day of free summer meals at BCPS schools

What: Today is the first day this summer when free breakfasts and lunches will be served in selected county schools. Baltimore County Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which provides free meals to all children (ages 18 and under) free of charge and without applications or registration. Breakfast will consist of cereal, a breakfast bar, or a toaster pastry served with fruit or juice and milk. For lunch, the program offers a cold sandwich, fruit or vegetable, juice or frozen treat, and milk.

What: Seneca Elementary School’s library media specialist Michelle Schnell is once again taking her school library on the road so that students will have easier access to books and other learning materials over the summer.

Ticket sales continue for BCPS Day at the Yard

What: Buy your tickets now for the annual BCPS Day at the Yard. Five dollars from each ticket sold will support student leadership programs in Baltimore County schools. BCPS Day at the Yard is Wednesday, Aug. 29, and the Orioles will be up against the Blue Jays. Game start is 7:05 p.m. Ticket prices range from $17 - $33, and tickets must be purchased online.

County library’s Summer Reading Program continues

What: The Baltimore County Public Library’s annual summer reading program offers reading incentives, challenges, events, and more for children of every age and for adults. The theme for this year is Libraries Rock!
When: Through Sunday, Aug. 19
Where: All Baltimore County Public Library branches

Free lunches served at Baltimore County public library branches

What: Baltimore County Public Library branches will offer free lunches to youth this summer at select locations. Those 18 years old and younger will be provided free lunches in conjunction with the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Food and Nutrition Services. Lunch will consist of a deli sandwich, fruit or vegetable, juice or frozen treat, and milk. From July 9 through Aug. 3, selected BCPS schools will serve free breakfast and lunch to young people 18 years old and younger. (Baltimore County Public Library and BCPS are equal opportunity providers. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.)

Parent University Workshop: Understanding and Managing Behaviors at Home

What: BCPS Parent University is offering a free series of workshops to assist parents with helping their preschool to elementary children consciously manage their thoughts and emotions. Topics addressed will be: introduction to conscious discipline; being the person you want your children to become; setting limits respectfully; noticing, accepting, and connecting with children; and building self-esteem and willpower. Extended Year Learning begins today

What: BCPS Extended Year Learning begins today for middle and high school students across the county.

First day of annual visual arts enrichment camp

What: The BCPS Summer Visual Arts Camp will provide students in Grades 3-12 an opportunity to develop and refine personal art skills via five-hour studio sessions and an art-related field trip. On the evening of Thursday, July 19, the program will hold an open house/reception, where students will exhibit works completed over the two-week period for viewing by families and teachers. The program offers three courses: An Exploration of Artists and Their Materials for students entering Grades 3-5, An Investigation of Media and Technique: Portfolio Development for students entering Grades 6-8, and Painting and Drawing from Observation: Portfolio Development for students entering Grades 9-12. There is more information on the summer program in the camp brochure and application.

STEM camp starts for elementary students

What: About 3,000 BCPS elementary school students will participate in Title I STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Camps. Activities at these camps will reinforce students' mathematics and reading skills during the summer. Students will have access to project based programs such as coding.

First day for Math Academy

What: BCPS students recommended to take Algebra 1 in Grade 8 or Grade 9 participate in Math Academy, a research-based blended learning mathematics program designed to meet the specific needs of individual students. Each day will include four hours of mathematics instruction in which students participate in whole-class, small group, and individual learning opportunities designed to develop students’ mindset, confidence, and beliefs about doing mathematics as they strengthen their understanding of key concepts and skills from prior grades to build their readiness for algebra.

Catonsville Middle launches its Love for Literacy program

What: Love for Literacy is a Catonsville Middle School summer language arts (LA) program designed to bridge the gap between LA 5 and LA 6 Advanced Academics for the purpose of providing more accelerated Language Arts course opportunities for student groups that are underrepresented in the Advanced Academics program.

MEGA Math program to begin at Catonsville Middle

What: MEGA Math was first offered at Catonsville Middle School in the summer of 2016 and again in the summer of 2017. Twenty students each summer who would not have otherwise had the opportunity to move into an Advanced Academics Math 6 class participated in the program and made a smooth, successful transition into AA Math 6. They continue to be successful today. The program is being offered again this summer.

Regional Summer College Boot Camp to be held in July and August

What: This summer, BCPS students who will enter Grade 12 in the 2018-2019 school year are invited to participate in free regional or school-specific Summer College Boot Camps. Each camp will vary, but all will offer information and resources on the process of selecting and applying to a college and applying for financial aid. Some camps will invite parent participation. Many will feature guest speakers from college admissions and financial aid offices. Students interested in participating must register with their school counselors.
