3 BCPS 2018 graduates named College-Sponsored Merit® Scholarship winners

TOWSON, MD. - The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that three 2018 Baltimore County Public Schools graduates are among the 3,500 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.

The honored students are:

  • Malachi M. Fowler, a Nottingham resident and Perry Hall High School graduate, who plans to study physics at University of Maryland.
  • Abhinav S. Khushalani, a Cockeysville resident and Dulaney High School graduate, who plans to study computer science at Northeastern University.
  • Albert J. Ko, an Owings Mills resident and Western School of Technology graduate, who plans to attend Northwestern University.
College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

The National Merit Scholarship Program was established in 1955 to honor scholastically talented American youth. It is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance.

By the conclusion of this year’s competition, about 7,500 National Merit Scholar Finalists will have won National Merit Scholarship Awards worth more than $31 million. In addition to the just-announced college-sponsored scholarships and the previously-announced National Merit® $2,500 Scholarships and corporate-sponsored scholarships, additional college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be announced on July 16.

More than 1.6 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, 16,000 Semifinalists were designated on a state representational basis. From the Semifinalist group, 15,000 met Finalist requirements and half of those will receive Merit Scholarships.
