"Youth Mental Health First Aid" course offered for parents, teachers, caregivers to support children

Eight-hour training offers plan to help youth in crisis

What: A free 8-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid training course will be available in January and February for parents, teachers, or anyone who lives or works with children. Sponsored by the Baltimore County Public Schools Parent University and the BCPS Office of Health Services, the course teaches an action plan to offer initial help to young people showing signs of mental illness or who are in a crisis and then to connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self-help care.

When: The course will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3, 2018, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where: Cockeysville Community Center

Background: The course is free, but participants must register by contacting Karen Heinrich of the BCPS Office of Health Services at 443-809-6397 or kheinrich@bcps.org. The course has been made possible through a grant from MD-AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) and sponsorship from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
