Franklin High senior to participate in prestigious U.S. Senate Youth Program

TOWSON - Jamie Roa, a senior at Franklin High School, has been selected to represent Maryland in the prestigious 56th Annual United States Senate Youth Program.

Through the program, two student leaders from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity will spend March 3 - 10 in Washington, D.C. During the week, Roa and the other student delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in meetings with the president and a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. All transportation, hotel, and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.

Roa participates in the Franklin High School Academy of Law. She has won "Outstanding Witness for the State" from the CLREP, the Maryland Mock Trial Association. She also won, with another Franklin High Moot Court team member, the Maryland Moot Court Competition.

This school year, Roa, who is taking seven Advanced Placement classes, serves as the captain of the varsity tennis team, and president of the National Honor Society. Outside of Franklin High, she is a member of the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council and a participant in Students Taking Action for Change, a student-led lobbying action group.

Roa will attend Tulane University in the fall and plans to study public health and international relations. After college, she plans to attend law school and pursue a career in public service.
