TOWSON, MD — Sandy Bixby of Edgemere Elementary School is one of 25 nominees for the 2017 Maryland School Librarian of the Year award.
“It is an honor to work with Ms. Bixby,” said Jennifer Lynch, principal of Edgemere Elementary. “She is a dedicated educator focused on bringing innovative programs to our young students. We are thrilled that the Maryland Association of School Librarians has recognized her, and we are proud of her many accomplishments.”
Bixby, who lives in the Edgemere community, has served as library media specialist at Edgemere Elementary since January 2011, after beginning her career in education as a primary grades teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education and a Master of Science degree in informational technology, both from Towson University. She was a National Board Certified Teacher – Early Childhood Generalist from 2005 – 2014, and she is a lifetime member of the Maryland Association of School Librarians and a member of the Baltimore County Public Schools Library Advisory Council.
In 2014, Bixby won a Patterson Foundation Grant to provide a new book for every student in the school. Two years later, she secured a grant from the Education Foundation of BCPS to pursue a community research project. In addition, she was a Baltimore Ravens Touchdown for Teachers finalist for 2016 and the 2016 Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce Elementary Educator of the Year.
Later this month, the Maryland Association of School Librarians’ selection committee will name five finalists from among the 25 nominees. The selection committee will evaluate the nominees based on the extent to which they exemplify the five key roles of a library media specialist -- administrator, leader, information specialist, teacher, and instructional partner. The 2017 Maryland School Librarian of the Year will be named during the Common Ground Conference in Ocean City on May 4 – 5.
