TOWSON, MD. – Baltimore County Public Schools food service officials want to know which community-based programs could benefit from a summer food service that continues to grow. Last summer, the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Food and Nutrition Services served a daily average of 4,400 children under the age of 18. Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program provides free cold breakfasts and/or lunches to groups of 20 or more low-income children. The meals are delivered to approved Baltimore County sites free of charge. The National Summer Food Service Program for Children seeks to serve those students who need good nutrition throughout the year, not just during the school year. Baltimore County's program is now looking for sponsors of enrichment, recreational, or activities programs that would be eligible for the Summer Food Service Program. Local programs do not have to be affiliated with Baltimore County or its public school system. Feeding sites must be approved as either "open" or "enrolled" sites. An open site is one in which at least half of the children in the area are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. An enrolled site is one in which at least half the children enrolled in the summer program are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. All children 18 years old or under are eligible to eat at an open site, while only enrolled children may eat at an enrolled site. Church programs, camps, community and civic organizations, and other groups might be eligible for the program.
