Four BCPS’ graduates win “Minds In Motion" scholar-athlete scholarships
Honorees represent Hereford, Loch Raven, and Pikesville high schools
TOWSON, MD— Four of the 13 Maryland recipients of 2012 Minds In Motion Scholarships, provided by The Allstate Foundation, are 2012 graduates of Baltimore County Public Schools.
Evan Anderson and Zachary Beil of Hereford High School, Stephanie Honig of Pikesville High School, and Emily Ruppel of Loch Raven High School each received $1,000 scholarships at a Minds In Motion luncheon held on June 5, 2012, in the Ravens' Team Locker Room at M&T Bank Stadium.
More than 600 school athletes submitted applications for the fifth year for this competitive scholarship program. Eligible student-athletes chosen must attend Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) schools and participate in MPSSAA recognized sports.
Following are brief descriptions of the winning BCPS’ students:
Evan Anderson – Hereford High School
Academic:
- Member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Honor Society, and the Science Honor Society
- National Merit commended scholar
- Advanced Placement Scholar
Athletics:
- Participated in soccer, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field
- Team captain for soccer for 2 years and track and field his senior year
- Team won gold medal for the Class 3A State Championship 4 x 800 meter relay
College Attending Fall 2012: University of Maryland – College Park on a Presidential Scholarship
Zachary Bile – Hereford High School
Academic:
- Member of National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Honor Society
- AP Scholar
Athletics:
- Primary participation was soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field
- Zach's soccer team made appearances in the State Semifinals the past two years and the State Finals when he was a sophomore
College Attending Fall 2012: University of Texas at Austin in the Cockrell School of Engineering
Stephanie Honig - Pikesville High School
Academic:
- Member of the National Honor Society
- AP Scholar with Distinction
- Carson Scholar for a total of 5 years
- Active with student government and school paper
Athletics:
- 4 year, 12 sport athlete participating in field hockey, indoor track and field, and lacrosse
- Received a prestigious 2012 BCPS' Mildred Murray All-Academic Scholar-Athlete Award
College Attending Fall 2012: University of Pennsylvania
Emily Ruppel – Loch Raven High School
Academic:
- National Honor Society
- National Science, Math, Spanish, and Music Honor Societies
- AP Scholar with Distinction
- National Merit Scholarship winner
- Participated in the BCPS' Honor Band and Orchestra along with the Junior All-State Band, the Princeton Model Congress, and the National Forensics League
Athletics:
- Cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field
- Team captain for all three sports the past two years
