Elementary and middle school students to compete in 24 Challenge ® Tournament

For the 14th consecutive year, Baltimore County Public Schools students will test their math skills in the fast-paced M&T Bank 24 Challenge® Math Tournament. Approximately 240 students in grades 5-8 from 75 county elementary and 24 county middle schools will compete by solving 24 Game® flashcards, a mental math game designed to improve abilities in computation, deductive reasoning, and problem solving. Tournament Grand Champions in five divisions of play (two elementary divisions and three middle school divisions) will be awarded $700 U.S. Savings Bonds. In addition, the other 15 finalists - three in each of five categories - will each receive $100 savings bonds. The competition will be held at the Crowne Plaza Baltimore starting at 9:00 a.m. with the awards ceremony starting at about 11:30 a.m. Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston and Michelle Denoncourt , M&T Bank's Regional Manager for Northern Baltimore County, will be among the dignitaries on hand to congratulate participants and winners. The Crowne Plaza is located at 2004 Greenspring Drive in Timonium.

Baltimore County Public Schools teams to compete in FIRST Robotics Competition at the Baltimore Convention Center

Teams from Parkville, Woodlawn, Dulaney, and Owings Mills high schools will be among the 24 Maryland teams and 49 total teams competing in Saturday's exciting culmination of the two-day annual Chesapeake Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt Street in Baltimore.. In the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition, students prepare for six weeks to solve a common problem using the same kit of parts and rules, designing and building robots that must navigate and complete a series of challenges. At the events, teams compete to win recognition for design excellence, competitive play, and sportsmanship. Last year, Woodlawn High School's nationally award-winning team, the Technowarriors, took home the highest award, the Chairman's Award, for its excellent performance and for their sportsmanship.FIRST (www.usfirst.org) is a not-for-profit organization founded by Dean Kamen to inspire and excite young people about science and technology. FIRST designs programs that build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Students invited to Health Care Career Fair at Security Square Mall

Students and parents are invited to attend the "Why Not a Career in Healthcare?" career fair on at Security Square Mall in Woodlawn from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Co-sponsored by Baltimore County Public Schools, the fair provides an opportunity for students to learn about healthcare career paths, meet healthcare professionals and college representatives, and find out about scholarships in this high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand occupational field. The event is free and open to the public. The mall is located at Security Boulevard at Beltway Exit 31 in Woodlawn.

Monday, March 15

"Green Gala" mathematics event to be held at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School

Students at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School, 428 Westham Way in Dundalk, are invited to a "Green Gala Math Event" from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the school. The event features a fun, hands-on math activity program geared for all students.

Going green at Ridge Ruxton School

Ridge Ruxton School will present a multicultural showcase featuring the theme of the Emerald Isle. Visitors are invited to learn about Ireland and other countries around the world, presented and enjoyed by the school's students. Also the event will feature the Ridge Ruxton Signers, a video about Ireland, and related activities for all ages. Carney Elementary School to combine dance, Internet safety workshop

The PTA of Carney Elementary School, 3131 East Joppa Road in Carney, is sponsoring a dance for all students and parents from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At the same time at the school, school library media specialist Kathy Wiles will host a parent workshop on Internet safety.

Pikesville High School to present Disney's Beauty and the Beast through March 18

The Pikesville Players of Pikesville High School will perform Disney's Beauty and the Beast musical beginning at 7:30 p.m. today and extending through Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20, with performances at 7:30 p.m. There also will be a matinee on Sunday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. All performances take place at the school, 7621 Labyrinth Road in Pikesville, and tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door.

"Donuts with Dad" invites fathers to share breakfast at Vincent Farm Elementary School

Students at Vincent Farm Elementary School will be sharing breakfast with their dads in the school cafeteria at 8:30 a.m., and then showing off their classrooms. During the classroom visits, parents will get a look at how the latest technology is being used to teach reading and math. In addition, a Lifetouch photographer will be on hand to photograph students with their fathers. Vincent Farm Elementary School is located at 6019 Ebenezer Road in White Marsh.

Future Educators Association of Baltimore County to meet at College of Notre Dame of Maryland

Hundreds of students from middle and high schools across Baltimore County will convene for the Eighth Annual Leadership Conference of the Future Educators Association from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During the conference, these budding educators will hear from state and Baltimore County Public Schools leaders, including State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy Grasmick and BCPS Teacher of the Year Cecily Anderson. Students will participate in workshops on a variety of education-related topics. In addition, many conference participants will tour the College of Notre Dame of Maryland campus where the conference is being held, which is located at 4701 North Charles Street in Baltimore.

Randallstown High School students wind up "Soles for Souls" campaign

Students from two programs at Randallstown High School will wrap up a special campaign to collect new and nearly new shoes in support of those affected by the earthquake in Haiti and in other nations in need. More than 80 students in the school's AVID program and another 70 from the school's book club have amassed more than 150 pairs of shoes and will end the drive by taking the shoes to a local shoe store for donation to those in need. Chadwick Elementary School to host second annual "Hop for Hopkins"

Chadwick Elementary School will hold its second annual "Hop for Hopkins" dance to benefit the Kids Helping Hopkins Foundation and the Johns Hopkins Children Center. Chadwick's dance from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. is sponsored by the school's grade 5 Student Council. Students will be treated to an evening of dancing, games, and prizes. Tickets cost $3.00 for the event, which is open to the Chadwick community. Localsponsors have donated items for a silent auction, including a signed football by Ravens'Domonique Foxworth, and all money raised will be donated to Kids Helping Hopkins. 4th Annual March Madness tournament to take place at Hereford High School

Hereford High School's SADD organization will host the 4th annual March Madness Basketball Tournament at 7:00 p.m. at Hereford High School, 17301 York Road in Parkton. Tickets are $5.00 in advance and $7.00 at the door. All proceeds raised for and during this event will be donated to the Joey Baseman and Taylor Cunningham Memorial Scholarship Funds in honor of these former Hereford High students who died in automobile accidents in 2005 and 2006. Last year, more than $9,000 was raised through ticket sales, concessions, T-shirt sales, and donations from the community. Faculty and students from both Hereford High and Hereford Middle School will participate in this event, and in addition to the basketball games, the event will feature an emcee and refreshments from Chick-Fil-A. To balance the festive atmosphere, there will be a Wall of Remembrance with photos and names of students Hereford has lost in automobile accidents. Various agencies will be present throughout the event to provide information about substance abuse and reckless driving.

Baltimore County PTA to hold its Reflection program on Sunday, March 21

The annual Reflections awards program, sponsored by the PTA Council of Baltimore County, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, at Cockeysville Middle School, 10401 Greenside Drive in Cockeysville. All Baltimore County PTA Award of Excellence and Award of Merit recipients as well as local PTA/PTSA Reflections coordinators will be formally recognized during this award ceremony. Since 1969, the PTA Reflections Program has challenged students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The theme selected for 2009-2010 was "Beauty is…."

Colgate Elementary School to celebrate Special Areas Family Night on Tuesday, March 23

Students and families of Colgate Elementary School, 401 51st Street in Dundalk, will help celebrate the school's "specials" content areas on Tuesday, March 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the school's cafeteria. Visitors will have a chance to play the violins and other instruments with music teachers, run an obstacle course with physical education teachers, and make bookmarks and swap books with reading specialists and school library media specialists.

Dundalk High School to host a "feeder school exhibit" on Wednesday, March 24

Dundalk High School will host a "2010 Dundalk Feeder School Exhibit"featuring the work of visual arts teachers and their students from Dundalk High School and the school's feeder schools, including Dundalk and Holabird middle schools and Berkshire, Colgate, Dundalk, Grange, Logan, and Norwood elementary schools. The exhibit, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, will celebrate student achievement and the school system's sequential art program, as well as recognize the diverse and supportive communities that surround Dundalk High and its feeder schools. The exhibit will be held in the gymnasium of Dundalk High School, which is located at 1901 Delvale Avenue in Dundalk.

Hernwood Elementary School to celebrate reading with Family Reading Night on Thursday, March 25

Hernwood Elementary School, 9919 Marriottsville Road in Randallstown, will celebrate reading with a special Family Reading Night on Thursday, March 25, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The event will include a Reading Pajama Party, and children will be invited to wear their pajamas to the activity. They can also bring blankets to lay upon while listening to wonderful stories being read to them by guest readers. Pictures from each guest reader's selected picture book will be projected for everyone to enjoy, and refreshments will be served.

Women's Career Symposium to be hosted by Windsor Mill Middle School on Thursday, March 25

To commemorate Women's History Month, a Women's Career Symposium sponsored by the Beautiful Divine Ladies will be held on Thursday, March 25, at Windsor Mill Middle School, 8300 Windsor Mill Road in Randallstown. For the second year,members of the Beautiful Divine Ladies will receive pertinent information from women in various professions including law, medicine, and library sciences, among others. Hernwood Elementary School is linking math facts with an Ice Cream Sundae Challenge to culminate Friday, March 26

Students at Hernwood Elementary School in Randallstown are meeting their Math Fact Challenge by getting ready for an ice cream extravaganza. In this ongoing program, each of the school's teachers has identified math fact goals for his or her students. Parents also received a list of suggestions to help their children study facts at home. Students will study and learn math facts through the winter and will demonstrate their knowledge by taking weekly quizzes continuing through March. When students reach their math fact goals, their names will be announced school-wide, and they will be invited to a special Ice Cream Sundae party on Friday, March 26, to celebrate their math mastery. Randallstown High School to present August Wilson's "Fences" from Thursday, March 25, through Sunday, March 28

The Community Players, a theatre group based in the Randallstown community, will join with the Randallstown High School Academy of Finance, art department, and theatre arts department to produce and present August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play "Fences."The powerful drama explores the legacy of an American family, and the Randallstown High production will be directed by Randallstown High School's principal, Cheryl Pasteur, who will also perform in the show. The show features school staff members Marc Stevens and Drew Peal, as well as senior Edem Kwame. Filling out the cast are established area actors Michael Kane and Ricky Williams, who also co-directs. The show dates are Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m., with a Sunday, March 28, matinee at 4:00 p.m. Ticket donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students through age 18 with a student ID. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult because of the nature of the play. All proceeds will benefit the RHS Fine Arts Department, and all shows will be held at the Randallstown High School theater, 4000 Offutt Road, Randallstown.

Summer Learning Expo available in April at Baltimore County libraries

Baltimore County Public Schools, in partnership with the Baltimore County Public Library and other community organizations, will hold a Summer Learning Expo from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on five dates in April, each at a different library branch. At the Expos, parents can support their child's learning over the summer by learning about reading programs, tutoring, day trips, area parks, college preparation, programs at area universities, and more. The dates and locations of the Expo are the following:

Carol Peck begins as monthlong poet-in-residence at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School on Monday, April 6

During April, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be engaged in a poetry residency with noted poet Carol Peck, an Artist-in-Education for the Maryland State Arts Council, whose multi-sensory approach to teaching makes learning hands-on and fun. During the residency, students will learn to use similes, metaphors, imagery, and imagination in their writing, and will have the opportunity to publish their poems to create a school poetry anthology. The poetry sessions will focus on an environmental theme. As a culminating activity, the grade 4 and 5 students will perform in an environmental play on Monday, April 19, based on the story "Just a Dream" by Chris Van Allsburg.The school is located at 428 Westham Way in Dundalk.

Hernwood Elementary School to host 18th Annual Hop for Hopkins on Friday, April 9

Hernwood Elementary School, 9919 Marriottsville Road in Randallstown, will hold its 18th Annual Hop for Hopkins on Friday, April 9, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the school. This special dance and evening of family fun benefits the Johns Hopkins Children Center through Kids Helping Hopkins,a values education program founded at Hernwood. Guest deejay"Detour Dave" Sandler of WBAL Radio and 98 Rock will host the event, and refreshments will be sold. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes for Hernwood families and guests.

The Spring Concert is coming to Halethorpe Elementary School on Thursday, April 15

The Halethorpe Elementary School Band and String Orchestra, under the direction of Kristen Trumpler, will perform their Spring Concert on Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. Music performed will include pieces from the Harry Potter movies, "Stars Wars," "Willie Wonka," and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts partnership with ClancyWorks Dance Company to debut performance on Saturday, April 17

A partnership between ClancyWorks Dance Company of Washington, D.C., and Patapsco High School and Center for the Art's Dance Company will result in a performance to debut on Saturday, April 17. As a result of grants from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and Alternate Roots, the ClancyWorks residency at Patapsco will continue with rehearsals through March and April leading up to the April debut. Patapsco dancers will be a part of the ClancyWorks Dance Company performance at Montgomery College Performing Arts Center Silver Spring Campus on Saturday, April 17, at 8:00 p.m. The piece will also be performed at the Patapsco Spring Dance Concert at 7:00 p.m. on both Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23.The performances will take place at the school at 8100 Wise Avenue in Dundalk.

March Madness and college awareness go hand in hand Halethorpe Elementary School

To raise awareness about college opportunities, students, teachers, and other staff members at Halethorpe Elementary School will participate in "March Madness Mondays," in which each will wear college gear or college colors on Mondays for the month. Vincent Farm Elementary School recycles "Cartridges For Kids"

Vincent Farm Elementary School students and their families are taking part in an ongoing recycling project by collecting used cell phones and computer ink cartridges. Students at Vincent Farm have learned that only 2.3 percent of Americans recycle old cell phones and that the reuse of electronic equipment is an excellent way to help manage some of the world's resources. The used items being collected by Vincent Farm students will help provide those in need with adequate equipment as well as preserve resources. MESA after-school club gearing up for competition at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School

The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Science Club at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School, 428 Westham Way in Dundalk, meets each week to prepare for MESA regional competition in March and April of 2010. Club members participate in activities focused on observation, recording data, problem solving and team work.

Wachovia Bank and Essex Elementary School team up for reading

Twice a week, employees at Wachovia Bank in Essex visit kindergarten classes at Essex Elementary School for a very important partnership - reading stories to students from books that will be donated to the school's library. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at about 9:30 a.m., guest readers visit the school and demonstrate to students their commitment to reading and to Essex Elementary School. The program runs for about four weeks at a time. Essex Elementary School is located at 100 Mace Avenue in Essex.
