Patapsco High School singers to perform with nationally-acclaimed composer Tim Janis on MPT

The Patapsco High School choir, under the direction of Jeffery Beyers, will perform with nationally-acclaimed composer Tim Janis in the composer's new "Celebrate America" musical special to be broadcast on Maryland Public Television. The Patapsco choir, along with high school choirs from across Maryland, will perform with Janis and his ensemble at 6:30 p.m. in a new special created by Janis to spotlight the nation's youth and celebrate music that uplifts and inspires. Janis, well known for his "Music with a Mission" projects, has worked on many philanthropic projects with recording artists such as Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Andre Previn, and The New York Philharmonic. He has also produced fundraising programs for PBS with actors George Clooney and James Earl Jones. "Celebrate America" was taped at Maryland Public Television in Owings Mills in early October 2009. The Patapsco students, who were the only Baltimore County students involved in the project, will sing "Danny Boy" during the special.

"Star Trek," the feature at Franklin High School's Movie Night

The Franklin High School Music Boosters group will hold a Movie Night at 6:00 p.m. at the school, 12000 Reisterstown Road in Reisterstown. The event is open to all in the school community, and tickets are $5 for popcorn and a drink (in addition to the movie presentation of "Star Trek"). Food and music will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the movie to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Loch Raven High School to hold Third Annual Craft Fair

Loch Raven High School's Third Annual Craft Fair will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The entire school, including the PTSA, Booster Club, Senior Post-Prom Party, the Junior Class, Relay for Life (to raise funds for the American Cancer Society), and the Forensics Team will benefit from this event, which will feature more than 50 crafters selling unique handmade items. Refreshments and food will also be available. The school is located at 1212 Cowpens Avenue in Towson.

"Ready, Set, Go" contest at Featherbed Lane Elementary School emphasizes healthy breakfasts

Students at Featherbed Lane Elementary School will participate in the statewide breakfast contest known as "Ready, Set, Go" through Friday, March 12. During the week, students will engage in a variety of activities to promote breakfast and healthy eating habits, including a poster-design contest depicting how a healthy breakfast benefits children. College Fair 2010 opens, showcasing 100+ colleges and universities through Tuesday, March 9

The College Fair 2010 event, co-sponsored by Baltimore County Public Schools and The Community College of Baltimore County, will allow prospective students to visit a college marketplace featuring information from more than 100 colleges, universities, and military schools, including CCBC, the University of Maryland colleges, McDaniel College, George Mason University, Morgan State University, Towson University, Stevenson University, Penn State University, and many more. The two-day event will be held today from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the campus of CCBC Essex, Building D - the Athletic and Wellness Center, 7201 Rossville Boulevard in White Marsh. Thursday, March 11

Mock Trial competition finals to be held

A team from Owings Mills High School will compete against a team from Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community High School in the finals of the annual Maryland High School Mock Trial Competition for the Third Judicial Circuit Courts beginning at 7:00 p.m. The competition calls for teams of students to debate cases and present arguments to win the mock trial competition for the district; winners will move on to statewide competition. The cases will be heard in Ceremonial Courtroom No. 5 of the old Baltimore County Courthouse at 400 Washington Avenue in Towson. Leading up to the finals, 21 teams from public and private schools in Baltimore and Harford counties competed against each other for the honor of representing the Third Judicial Circuit Courts.

Saturday, March 13

Elementary and middle school students to compete in 24 Challenge® Tournament

For the 14th consecutive year, Baltimore County Public Schools students will test their math skills in the fast-paced M&T Bank 24 Challenge® Math Tournament. Hundreds of Baltimore County children in grades 5-8 from 75 county elementary and 24 county middle schools will compete by solving 24 Game® flashcards, a mental math game designed to improve abilities in computation, deductive reasoning, and problem solving. Five grand champions will win $1,000 U.S. Savings Bonds from M&T Bank. The competition will be held at the Crowne Plaza Baltimore starting at 9:00 a.m. with the awards ceremony starting at about 11:30 a.m. Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston and Lisa Schwartz, M&T Bank's regional manager for Northern Baltimore County, will be among the dignitaries on hand to congratulate participants and winners. The Crowne Plaza is located at 2004 Greenspring Drive in Timonium.

Johnnycake Elementary School's Family Night scheduled for Monday, March 22

Johnnycake Elementary School will host its Johnnycake Family Night on Monday, March 22, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the school at 5910 Craigmont Road in Woodlawn. The event will feature games such as 24 Challenge®, Connect 4, Scrabble, and Scattergories in the school gym and cafeteria, a PTA presentation on genealogy, and an exploration of how family card and board games can help students sharpen reading and math skills.

Victory Villa Elementary School hosts Family Fairy Tale Reading Night on Wednesday, March 24

Victory Villa Elementary School, located at 500 Compass Road in Middle River, will host its 18th annual Family Fairy Tale Reading Night on Wednesday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m. The theme for the event is "Fairies, Frogs, and Funny Men." Bill Wood will be the guest storyteller.

Hernwood Elementary School to celebrate reading with Family Reading Night on Thursday, March 25

Hernwood Elementary School, 9919 Marriottsville Road in Randallstown, will celebrate reading with a special Family Reading Night on Thursday, March 25, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The event will include a Reading Pajama Party, and children will be invited to wear their pajamas to the activity. They can also bring blankets to lay upon while listening to wonderful stories being read to them by guest readers. Pictures from each guest reader's selected picture book will be projected for everyone to enjoy, and refreshments will be served.

Randallstown High School to present August Wilson's "Fences" from Thursday, March 25, through Sunday, March 28

The Community Players, a theatre group based in the Randallstown community, will join with the Randallstown High School Academy of Finance, art department, and theatre arts department to produce and present August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize winning stage play, "Fences."The powerful drama explores the legacy of an American family, and the Randallstown High production will be directed by Randallstown High School's principal, Cheryl Pasteur, who will also perform in the show. The show features school staff members Marc Stevens and Drew Peal, as well as senior Edem Kwame. Filling out the cast are established area actors Michael Kane and Ricky Williams, who also co-directs. The show dates are Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m., with a Sunday, March 28, matinee at 4:00 p.m. Ticket donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students through age 18 with a student ID. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult because of the nature of the play. All proceeds will benefit the RHS Fine Arts Department, and all shows will be held at the Randallstown High School theater, 4000 Offutt Road, Randallstown.

Summer Learning Expo available in April at Baltimore County libraries

Baltimore County Public Schools, in partnership with the Baltimore County Public Library and other community organizations, will hold a Summer Learning Expo from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on five dates in April, each at a different library branch. At the Expos, parents can support their child's learning over the summer by learning about reading programs, tutoring, day trips, area parks, college preparation, programs at area universities, and more. The dates and locations of the Expo are the following:

Victory Villa Elementary School to host Science Fair on Wednesday, April 14

Victory Villa Elementary School, located in Middle River at 500 Compass Road, will host its annual science fair on Wednesday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. Students will display the results of their scientific investigations, and family members are invited to attend.

The Spring Concert is coming to Halethorpe Elementary School on Thursday, April 15

The Halethope Elementary School Band and String Orchestra, under the direction of Kristen Trumpler, will perform their Spring Concert on Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. The band will perform movie themes from the Harry Potter movies, "Stars Wars" and "Pirates of Caribbean." The orchestra will perform themes from the Harry Potter movies, "Willy Wonka" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Halethorpe Elementary School is located at 4300 Maple Avenue in Halethorpe.

Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts partnership with ClancyWorks Dance Company to debut performance on Saturday, April 17

A partnership between ClancyWorks Dance Company of Washington, D.C., and Patapsco High School and Center for the Art's Dance Company will result in a performance to debut on Saturday, April 17. As a result of grants from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and Alternate Roots, the ClancyWorks residency at Patapsco will continue with rehearsals through March and April leading up to the April debut. Patapsco dancers will be a part of the ClancyWorks Dance Company performance at Montgomery College Performing Arts Center Silver Spring Campus on Saturday, April 17, at 8:00 p.m. The piece will also be performed at the Patapsco Spring Dance Concert at 7:00 p.m. on both Thursday, April 22, and Friday, April 23.The performances will take place at the school at 8100 Wise Avenue in Dundalk.

March Madness and college awareness go hand in hand Halethorpe Elementary School

To raise awareness about college opportunities, students, teachers, and other staff members at Halethorpe Elementary School will participate in "March Madness Mondays," in which each will wear college gear or college colors on Mondays for the month. Students also will be decorating classrooms with artwork relating to colleges. The school is located at 4300 Maple Avenue in Halethorpe. Please call the school for event details and specific times.

Vincent Farm Elementary School recycles "Cartridges For Kids"

Vincent Farm Elementary School students and their families are taking part in an ongoing recycling project by collecting used cell phones and computer ink cartridges. Students at Vincent Farm have learned that only 2.3 percent of Americans recycle old cell phones and that the reuse of electronic equipment is an excellent way to help manage some of the world's resources. The used items being collected by Vincent Farm students will help provide those in need with adequate equipment as well as preserve resources. Hernwood Elementary School is linking math facts with an Ice Cream Sundae Challenge

Students at Hernwood Elementary School in Randallstown are meeting their Math Fact Challenge by getting ready for an ice cream extravaganza. In this ongoing program, each of the school's teachers has identified math fact goals for his or her students. Parents also received a list of suggestions to help their children study facts at home. Students will study and learn math facts through the winter and will demonstrate their knowledge by taking weekly quizzes continuing through March. When students reach their math fact goals, their names will be announced school-wide, and they will be invited to a special Ice Cream Sundae party on Friday, March 26, to celebrate their math mastery. After-school clubs gearing up for competition at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School

Two after-school clubs at Eastwood Elementary Magnet School, 428 Westham Way in Dundalk, are busy preparing students for competitions in 2010. The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Science Club meets each week to prepare for MESA regional competition in March and April of 2010. Club members participate in activities focused on observation, recording data, problem solving and team work. Meanwhile, the school's Black Saga Club students challenge each other with facts and information about African-American history each week as they prepare for the statewide competition in March.

Wachovia Bank and Essex Elementary School team up for reading

Twice a week, employees at Wachovia Bank in Essex visit kindergarten classes at Essex Elementary School for a very important partnership - reading stories to students from books that will be donated to the school's library. On Tuesdays and Thursdays at about 9:30 a.m., guest readers visit the school and demonstrate to students their commitment to reading and to Essex Elementary School. The program runs for about four weeks at a time. Essex Elementary School is located at 100 Mace Avenue in Essex.
