What: Before an audience of 1,600 elementary, middle, and high school students, 37 high school musicians will perform alongside the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra during the Baltimore County Public Schools' annual "Side By Side" concert. The students, all members of the county's high school honors band or orchestra, were selected through a highly competitive audition process, have participated in master classes with members of the BSO, and have held four preparatory rehearsals. The program features music by Strauss, Brahms, Dvorák, Bottesini, Walker, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky and will be led by Mei-Ann Chen, Assistant Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony,

Background: The concert will include a double bass performance by student Andrew Dissen of Perry Hall High School. The honor music students performing represent the following high schools: Catonsville, Dulaney, Hereford, Loch Raven, Patapsco, Perry Hall, and Towson. The collaborative concert is a tribute to the high quality music program in Baltimore County Public Schools. In 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, the nation's leading music education and advocacy organizations honored Baltimore County as one of the 100 top communities in the nation for music education.
