Sudbrook Magnet Middle School, 4300 Bedford Road in Pikesville, will examine issues of diversity and tolerance through its annual program called "Facing History and Ourselves, "which is currently underway at the school and continues through Wednesday, December 23. The program is a two-week mini-semester that engages all eighth graders in a critical study of man's inhumanity to man. During this intensive course, students spend three of four periods each day studying, discussing, reflecting, and acting upon the program's concepts. This year, students will spend the first week studying concepts such as levels of prejudice, indoctrination, propaganda, societal roles, causes of the Holocaust, and impacts of Nazi policies. Students will hear Holocaust survivor Leo Bretholz speak and will visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The second week of the program draws parallels between historical injustices worldwide and domestic discrimination. The students apply the same concepts to the study of racial, religious, gender, and ethnic prejudice in the United States, culminating in a study of the Civil Rights Movement and a panel of Civil Rights advocates sharing their experiences. Students will also visit the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore. At the end of the program, the students will apply what they have learned about man's inhumanity to man by creating books and sharing them with Sudbrook's grade 6 students.
