Schools prepare to welcome parents, community for American Education Week

Special events planned Nov. 16-20

What: Schools across Baltimore County will celebrate American Education Week with a variety of activities designed to showcase for parents and the community the teaching and learning going on each day in every classroom. Among the many special events planned in BCPS schools are the following:

  • Eastwood Elementary Magnet School kindergarten through grade 2 students will present "Stone Soup: ‘A Rock Opera'" on Monday, November 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the school at 428 Westham Way, Dundalk.
  • Fullerton Elementary School, 4400 Fullerton Avenue in Fullerton, will host an ice cream social and theater production of "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17.
  • Pine Grove Middle School, 9200 Old Harford Road in Carney, will hold a Parent Empowerment Night covering a variety of academic support topics at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18.
  • Charlesmont Elementary School, 7800 W. Collingham Drive, Dundalk, hosts a Family Literacy Night dinner including a presentation by author and musician Barry Louis Polisar, at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19.
  • Riverview Elementary School's PTA invites parents to a "Parent and Child Holiday Make & Take" event to be held on Friday, November 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the school, 3298 Kessler Road, Lansdowne.

Additional Information:
During American Education Week, most schools set aside specific times for parents to visit their children's classrooms. In addition, many schools also host special events, including book fairs, reading nights, book swaps, music lessons, and more. Nationally, American Education Week, sponsored by the National Education Association, has been celebrated for 88 years. The theme for American Education Week is "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility."
