Learning part of Veterans Day observance in BCPS

Superintendent Hairston to join Governor, First Lady at Dumbarton event

TOWSON, MD. - BCPS Superintendent Joe A. Hairston, Ed.D., will welcome Gov. Martin O'Malley and First Lady Judge Katie O'Malley to Dumbarton Middle School on Wednesday, November 11, during one of dozens of Veterans Day observances taking place in Baltimore County schools.

Governor and First Lady O'Malley will visit Dumbarton with Dr. Hairston to kick off a letter-writing campaign thanking veterans, service members, and military families for their contributions to our nation. Also participating in the 10:45 a.m. event will be State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, County Executive James T. Smith, Jr., and Brigadier General James A. Adkins, along with Dumbarton's principal, Nancy Fink, and students. The school is located at 300 Dumbarton Road in Rodgers Forge.

Other BCPS Veterans Day observances for Wednesday include:

  • Fifth District Elementary School, 3725 Mount Carmel Road, Upperco: First-graders will present an assembly for the school including flag presentations, area veterans honored with poems and songs, and a school-wide singing of "America the Beautiful."

  • Seventh District Elementary School, 20300 York Road, Parkton: The school will hold its annual celebration at 9:00 a.m., including an honor guard from the Parkton American Legion post and students providing information and thoughts about Veterans Day.

  • Deep Creek Elementary School, 1101 E. Homberg Avenue, Essex: An Air National Guard member will speak with fourth-graders at 9:00 a.m. about the history and meaning of the day. Students will create a PowerPoint show to share with the school.
