TOWSON, MD. - Finding out who built the largest aircraft in history, entering a writing contest, figuring out the 293 ways to make change for a dollar, and participating in free family art projects at a local museum are just some of the ideas included on the November 2009 Monthly Learning Calendar for Families, produced by the Parent Support Services Office of Baltimore County Public Schools.
The calendar is available online at www.bcps.org/offices/dpd/pdf/Monthly-Learning-Calendars/November2009.pdf. The calendar features topics for family discussion and research, ideas for ways to incorporate learning into family life, and information on fun educational events and activities in the community. Icons identify if the suggested activity is appropriate for prekindergarten, elementary, and/or secondary students and also reflect whether the idea supports learning in mathematics, science, reading, writing, social studies, or the arts.
The calendars are developed by Chris Peter, resource center leader of the Southwest Resource Center at Maiden Choice, and were initiated during the 2007-2008 school year.
In addition to the Monthly Learning Calendar for Families, the Office of Parent Support Services, part of the Professional Development Department, coordinates the Parentmobile (an award-winning mobile resource center for parents and communities), maintains five educational resource centers that are open to the community, and supports schools in partnering with parents.
